We are starting a small business and I am looking for a used chipper or CDU. I would like to get input on good brands and bad brands as well as good and bad models by different manufacturers. I have always hauled off the brush but would like to get a chipper since we have a decent commute to a dump site where I live and work. I am doing this as part time work on my days off from the fire department I work for. I have worked full and part time as a climber for the last 7 years but I have never owned or operated a chipper unit and would like to get some opinions before I purchase one I would not be happy with

2001 Bandit 90 Chip Box Combo - YouTube

I think bandit is the only company that currently makes these (sorry for the poor video). They are extremely difficult to find on the used market.

I saw one at the dump recently- the guy was pulling it with his f350 and had a small stumper in the bed!

You could probably get it a lot cheaper by finding a used chipper and dump trailer and having a welder custom make it. I imagine they cost over 30g's new from Bandit.

You could also get a small chipper and chip into your pickup and remove chips via load handler. OR you could have someone install a dump hoist underneath with the stock bed. I'd love to get a larger pickup and do that for stump grinding.

Good models for a small op would be a bandit 6-9". A 9" Vermeer is great too (bc935?). I would stay away from the Vermeer 6" as it has been described as the "poulan pro of chippers". Chuck in ducks are easy to find (and cheap!) as well but dangerous.

Thanks for the information We are definitely looking for a used unit. I have a F-350 with a dump bed located and I have a welder and the ability to fabricate a box on it. Any idea where a good used unit is at or where to look for one? I have been watching craigslist and ebay but haven't found any bargains.

Chipper/Dump Trailer

As posted above i took the route of putting a used chipper on the front of an extended tongue of a deck-over dump trailer. I also looked into the Bandit Chipper box combo but i got the same response "too expensive" and some guys said the box is too small.

I put a used 8" chipper on the tongue with a 12 foot deck-over dump on the back, The chipper is run by a 25 horse kohler so its not going to eat whole trees or anything but it handles anything we dont cut up for firewood. Built sides and a back to keep the chips in and put a load cover tarp across the top when using it.

Only issue is the tongue weight of the trailer empty is pretty serious, puts alot less squat on the truck when its got something in the trailer.

I have a Dodge 3500 and made a dump box for it. Used aluminium to keep it light.

I found a woodchuck WC-17 with a bad piston. The owner is a friend of mine. He said it will need a sleeve too. It's a 2004 model with a deutz diesel engine. He will sell it as is for $3,500. Is it a good unit and any idea what it will cost to repair it?
