I'm looking for information on the old Boynton style wood coal furnace, the type that has the fire pot in sections and a doughnut style heat exchanger on top. The one that used to be in our house had "International Heater" on the firebox door. It also had a primitive looking thermostat thing that used chains to switch from "check" to "draft". I found an old instruction sheet in the basement telling how to burn hard or soft coal in it but it doesn't really explain how to run the furnace. I'm wondering if anyone still uses something like this or has used one and could tell me how they worked? I'd like to know more about the "check" and "draft" settings and what they were for. Thanks!

I bought an Alaskan and a ton of rice coal in bags a few weeks ago at an auction sale. The stove is going to be a boat anchor (scrap steel) and the coal is getting used up in my OWB. I thought maybe the coal would work but it's really just a pain to use and doesn't seem to burn too well. Another great auction buy.

Yeah, if ya don't give 'er some air from underneath coal will heat up red hot and just sit there. Or if thrown into a big pile all at once, then not even red hot
