No, not redwoods, mostly junk wood that I can get for free, usually A LOT of hardwood knots. I got tired of beating stuck blocks off of the wedge on my old splitter with a sledge hammer, it had a 4 inch cylinder with 3000 psi, 18.8 tons, and would stall the hydraulics, so I put a 5 inch cylinder on it, 29.5 tons. That helped some but still gets stuck some. The NH splitter claims 14 sec. cycle time, about what I got now.

yeah you could saw them up... but wheres the fun in that.. there is something quite pleasing about the hydraulic whine and the cracking wood as it yields to the the power of hydraulic and steel... and the more power the better.. and how often to we get a chance to 'justify' a new toy :)

No Husky, there's nothing wrong with you. To each his own, but I have to agree with Jkebxjunke, the more power the better. I used to use a 100 ton press at an old job pressing transmission gears off and on shafts and that was a rush when a gear was stuck and the pressure would climb up to almost 100 tons then POP (more like BANG) loose. Made eveybody in the shop pucker up.

i know big bangs back when did plastic injection molding we were flipping as 12k lb mold and the truck flipped over lol. at first the back wheels came up about 3ft off the ground. we coulda saved it but the guy operating the crane lowered it and in doing so put all the weight back on the truck and over she went. 12k lbs of steel right into the floor. the truck right over top of it, battery acid everywhere. the front office people come running down (we were in the cellar) to see what happened. it was pretty crazy. nothing got broken at all no one was hurt. only damage was to the molds nickel plating from the batter acid. good times

In a pinch

mmmm you could just split em with the saw. thats the fun way to do it and it wont cost you any more money. its win win :)

I wouldent consider, using a saw, no mater what brand or size an option to splitting rounds on a daily basis or a friendly alternative, once in a while , sure, .saws are for cutting and spliters are for spliting, Thats what splitters are for,.. Get one that will do the job 90 plus % of the time,....

junkfxr...interesting nickname... ya know ya could just build a splitter .. the mother of all splitters one that would make alot of people :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: and post some pics !
I need to get a new dig camera... but right now my extra fundage is going toward the outside wood furnace. and a new saw. ( and a new baby on the way too) some things just take priority ya know?

Yeah, priorities bite. I started building the mother of all splitters several years ago. It's a good thing that I've got a welder and torches. Some things worked good and others didn't, kept bending and breaking things, weld some more support here, bend that back, oops, need to weld that back on. I finally got fed up and thought that I might just buy one, particularly after they way that steel prices have gone up in the last couple of years and our only scrap yard that would sell stuff closed down. My current splitter is built on a piece of 12" W beam. I have bowed it up lengthwise and bent the flanges up at almost a 90 degree angle. Spent all morning with a big rosebud and a sledge hammer to fix that one, then welded 3/4" plate to the top flange. Pictures are almost out of the question, we are limited to dial up out here in the woods.

I hear ya on the dial-up... I had dial up for years.. I cant get DSL 2500 ' too far from central office.... cable stops a mile down road... I ended up with satellite broad band.. beats the :censored: out of dial up

We have cable at the end of our driveway, 1/4 mile away, too far to run it to the house, doesn't matter, they're still analog and don't offer internet. I still think satellite is too high just for internet access.

satellite runs about 50 a month fro the low end and 80 for high end bout what you would pay for cable
