I AM looking for us forest service or other instruction for falling with the open face notch. I know there have been a few links posted over the years to some very informative sites for falling instructions. I tried to search for them but couldn't find them.

Thanks in advance.

I think this one does a pretty good job of explaining the aim, and is much better than most at describing issues on the back cut.

It also includes a whole lot of general chainsaw precautions and use instructions.

Felling

Murphy,

Likely you already know, but the definitive text for timber fallers is
Professional timber falling : a procedural approach by D. Douglas Dent. The power saw training for the USFS is based on this text and his videos. Any real and lasting saw training has come from Mr. Dent. He was the first to collect, examine, and develop acceptable methods of production timber felling with power saws in the Pacific Northwest during the 1970's. There are some used copies floating around the inter-webs for twenty bucks or so, well worth the money.

You thought of going to atreestory.com and dropping G. Berankek an email to see if he has any leads on that kind of thing?

How did you stumble across this. I have never heard of the Maine Employers Mutual Insurance Company and I live in Maine. But they certainly do go in depth.

I don't remember where I got this. I think I was looking in someone else's website that has a bunch of links to different tree stuff, and this was one of the links.

I thought it was good material, so I saved it.
