I had cut this last November, had a friend of a friend mill it. A different friend knew a guy at his work that has a kiln, so got it dried by him.
I had a 300 Win Mag that I bought new in '01, maybe put 200 rounds through it and haven't shot it in 3-4years, so I traded that towards this planer and dust set up.
Well I planed it down and turned some of that maple into our stairway:msp_thumbup:
I figured between the stairway and 1x2 that I sawed out of the board to be around $225, considering that I have $300 into milling/kiln I am happy with that already!
And I have around 46 more boards, 1/2 of that maple and the other half walnut.

Enough chatter

Thanks guys!
I will get some pics up once it's all done, the newel on the left has some great quarter sawing to it.
Going to make a coffee table out of the walnut eventually.

Beautiful job!

But for a true full circle you have to plant the trees, then wait 30 to 100 years, carefully pruning the lower limbs for knot free lumber :)

Lol! I don't have that kinda time!!
It did come from our land, and its been in the family for 35+ yrs.

Over the years, with the help of my dad and brother, i have planted over 12,000 tree's here on my place. I now have a few getting big enough to harvest, and i WILL make them go full circle.

Nice job that maple looks good. What are your plans for the Walnut?

Coffee table, maybe entertainment center.
I have 3 boards 2 1/4"thick of maple and 2 that thick of walnut, those I hope to someday make a butcher block end grain countertop.:msp_thumbup:

Good luck with that and keep up posted. I have a drainage ditch along the side of my house that keeps jamming up and running out into the field and the farmer wants all the trees cut from along it. I walked it the other day and there are 5 or 6 nice walnuts that are 10" to 18" in diameter and 8 to 10 feet to the first branch. I have a granberg 36" mill that I haven't used and will give it a try on these walnuts and see what I can come up with.

Do yourself a favor and mill it up! Sure it's a bunch of work but I had a good time from start to finish on em, and some thing that will always be there, and a good conversation piece to boot.
Plus walnut is great to look at, but it make my nose itch and sneeze like a mo fo.
