Greetings All,

This saw was seen recently in the for sale forum complete with the Australia Option. It survived the trip here without trouble and there was even an extra bar and chain in the box with it. It's in pretty good shape, better than I'd hoped for and the paint's about 80%; chipped/flaked off in places and worn off on the bottom.

The tear-down was started a couple evenings ago but I stopped after the side cover was off - needed the brush and solvent treatment! Full of dirt all around (expected) and the cylinder fins were completely clogged at the top. Didn't want to tear into it there and make a mess of the points enclosure to say nothing of my work bench.

I had time this afternoon to work on it and look at it seriously in the sunlight. Figured it would needs points and a condenser along with a plug and an air-filter. It definitely needs a new air filter and also the sprocket and especially the sprocket/drum bearing. As it happens the points are fine, the fuel line and filter are firm and the carb looks new - all shiny and clean.

Cleans up nicely!

But looking down the carb adapter it appears that someone used a screwdriver or something to hold the piston, presumably to get the flywheel nut off and broke chunk out of the piston.

The top part of the piston looks fine.

This is particularly frustrating since getting the flywheel off wasn't that difficult on this saw; the parts are right out in the air and easy to reach. It took me longer to find a piece of jute and cut it off than it did to actually put it in the plug hole and get the flywheel loose and off.

What do the experts say? Will it run like this? Short on power? Safe to run it at all? Anyone have a piston and ring they'd part with?

I am disappointed; I was really looking forward to hearing this thing speak!

From the peek of the unbroken part of the skirt you can see, it looks to have a bit of scoring on it. If it were my saw, I would take it completely down, to have a real good look at the cylinder walls, (it will probably be ok, the cylinder). Nothing like knowing for sure! I would mic the piston, and order up a new one, knoeing what the correct size nexs to be, along with rings. They aren't terribly costly, then put it back together and as RandyMac says, "go forth and fear no evil"! You will know what you got then.

Just a little north of Kansas City.

The issue will be getting parts. I was unable to find a piston and ring for a much newer Poulan. I know a lot more 10-10s were made but still, this is a much older saw.

You're looking in the wrong place. Lots of parts around for those. I gave away a piston not long ago.

I'm in Smithville and I float back to Gallatin. So if you need a hand pm me.

I looked pretty hard - a lot of online vendors showed them in stock and available but the day after an order was placed an unfriendly e-mail "ORDER CANCELLED" would arrive containing "part or parts no longer available."
