My 15 year old Autumn Blaze maples central leader from the trunk is split half way up on a 20 ft. tree. Is cutting the main trunk detrimental to the tree or will it grow a new central leader? I assume at some point it will break off.

Odd... others will know better but that could be lightning hit. Most trees die after that.

You got two choices wrap it up or cut it off.

I would guess hidden behind the leaves is a weak tight crotch. Weather opened the weak union splitting down the stem. You are fortunate it didn't split completely out.
Professionally installed bracing and cable is the best course of action to maintain tree structure.
