I bought a loop of chain from the local Husky dealer today for $45 (28 inch bar, 93 DL, .050 gauge Sandvik Windsor). Seems to me the price of the bulk chain would be $10 or less.

After I started walking normally again, I decided for $100 (chain breaker and rivit spinner) it would be much cheaper to make my own chain loops.

Is my logic flawed?

$45!!!! Ouch! $10 is a little low. Maybe $15, and then you'd probably have to buy 100 ft. to get that price. Otherwise, no, I don't see any flaw in your logic.

My buddy was complaining about the 100 feet of chain his dad bought, full bummper safety chain. Cuts like a dull plastic knife through frozen butter.
Make sure you get the chain you want. It takes a long time for one guy cutting to use up 100 feet. Especially semi-chisle, round ground, full bummper, safety.
You could split a roll with somebody else, or two somebody elses.
A lot of guys do that with rope. Buy a 600 foot spool and cut it up to share. Great savings!

This idea has been kicked around quite a bit.The general consensus is that if you use a lot of chain, roll your own.If not,as myself, buy them as needed.Baileys, for one,has popular sized loops on sale from time to time.Even when not on sale it only costs a buck or 2 to get one made.I myself have bulk chain, spinner etc. but seldom spin one up with the exception of 1/2",which I hand rivet. That however,is a whole different subject.

I try and do all of my business w/ my local dealer, but w/ his absurd chain and bar prices online places get that business. You can get premade loops at places like bailey's or commercial cutters for short money w/ out spending the extra money and time on a breaker and spinner.
