If one purchased 10 or 20 acres of treeless property, and was ambitious enough to plant small trees on it, would it be reasonable to expect to harvest them in about 20 years and actually make money? In a climate like northern NYS, what would be the most prudent and most profitable trees to plant?

Making Money??

I assume that nursery trees are more costly...that said, could it then be possible to create a profit in a short time like 20 years? What type of tree would be best for value and growth rate?

I was thinking about planting some Black Walnut and White Oak, but as an investment for my Children. And that's if the trees aren't wiped out by some crazy invasive pest.
As others are saying, you can't make money growing new timber in 20 years...

I think they are all good ideas but if you are unsure split it up. I agree that Christmas trees or nursery trees will give you a faster turnaround. Spruce around here are an easy sell at only a few feet tall because everyone seems to want them in their yard and for screens, and obviously for Christmas
