Hi all. I tonight looked at a couple used 6400 series saws. They are in decent shape, and don't have a lot of run time on them. The owner wants $348.00 for them each. I was wondering if you guys think this is a good price? He said I can take them and try them out for a half day. I plan on pulling the air filters and checking inside the carbs, and hopefully pulling the mufflers and checking piston and cylinders. I was hoping for some input from you guys about the quality of these saws.

As far as I know, I could put on a cylinder and piston for one of the bigger models at a later date correct?

Well, I've not had one apart, but since the 6400 is the 64cc version of the 64/73/79cc chassis I'd go with "yes, you can put the cylinder/piston on at a later date".

Fetch a copy of the parts list PDF and see where the only different parts are the labels, bucking spikes, and cylinder/pistons. Specifically, the case (thus cylinder bolt patter) and crank assemblies all have the same part number.

I think you'd be wise to follow through.

Sorry Steevo, glens got it right. When i went to the Dolmar site, I mistakenly clicked on the 6800, which is one of the older models.

How used are the saws? You can get a 7900 pwr head rather well priced from Hunter, I think. Might be a better deal than upgrading the 6400 at a later date.

Others have confirmed that the saws are the same except for the piston/cylinder.

These saws look to be in good shape. I am going back today, and will find out how many hours are on them. I thought the price was pretty good. But, I dont know much about them. I used the Dolmar's back in the '80's, but they were quite a different saw then. I just thought that maybe if I got them, and they turned out to have a problem down the road w/piston & cylinder, I would go to the bigger displacement.

I picked up a very nice Makita 6401 from eBay over the winter. It had been a rental and came with a nearly new bar and new 20" safety chain which was quickly replaced with a 25" bar that I had on hand. I detailed it in a thread earlier.
The seller had been auctioning them individually from time to time, and they had caught my attention. Then he listed four all at the same time, with the sales finishing up on a Monday afternoon. I ended up paying $240.
It showed up two days later in a box too big to hide from my wife. I pulled the muffler and checked the cylinder: good. Fired on the third pull and its been running great since. I did drill a few extra holes in the muffler. Its a very strong, well made saw that puts Stihl to shame.
I checked on upgrading. All of the parts are the same in the series except the piston and jug. According to Dan, Terry, and others, swapping out to a 7901 top end is simple. If I had the money right now, I'd probably do it, but I'm happy with the saw as is. 13.5 is a bit heavy for a 64cc saw, but not for a 79cc. Still, its got more power than your typical 64cc. I heard that there was a power ported top end floating around a while ago - don't know if its still available, but you might want to PM woodsjunkie.
When they come out with the 50cc bubble top saw, my 026 is up for sale.

Sounds like you got a great saw for a great price. I do agree it's a little heavy for 65cc, but with the ability to give it the larger jug, I think it makes a difference. Sounds like you're quite happy with it. I am going back today to take another look, and will be really checking them out.

Here's an update on these saws: both are new in January of 02. One has 68 days of run time, with no repairs, the other 91 days of run time, been repaired a few times but nothing major. Both are priced the same: $348.92. I pulled filter covers, both filters and carb throats look good. Not a lot of dust in the carb area. I didnt get a chance to pull of the mufflers yet. What do you guys think? I am respecting your opinion on these saws, since I don't really have any experience with them.

That's a good price. Maybe he can throw in some goodies like extra chains, but I wouldn't let that be a deal breaker. Go for it.
