Has anyone made the winch system that will describes in his book? I have read it and was wondering on if it is really worth the time to set it up. Looks like it saves on some bending over and not hard on the back that way. I was thinking about going out and getting the material for it today, since we are getting 6-8" of snow anyways, good day to sit inside and make something.

Well I made some progress on the winch system. I have the winch yoke roughed out . needs some holes drilled and some sanding and a coat of varnish. Any body no wear to get the cheek block pulleys that he showed in his book? I need a new camera , pictures coming soon.

If the log is not too long and it is sloped you don't need a winch.

Once it is set up the slope works for every horizontal cut so there is no need to set up winches every time.
After a sloped log your next best friend is a throttle lock.

I was thinking that the winch might be handy when I try to make my 25' beams, might save the old back a little. Other wise I will try to slope the wood like you have done. Can you repost pictures of your log lift please.

rather than repost everything again I have posted pics of the log lifter on another site (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f132/lift-log-59940/index2.html)

To anyone making winches, one thing to note about Will Malloff's winch is the way the towing point on the mill is along the same line as the bar. This is because winch points that are not on this line may cause the mill to rack and may lead to problems down the track.
