Manual Oiler Question

I am in the process of refurbishing an older Homelite Super XL with a manual pump oiler. The brass stem and button will come right out of the bushing thats in the handle casting. The brass button stem has a recess at the bottom - do I just install a C-clip or is something broken?

The recess is probably for a rubber o-ring, check and see if there are any remains of one in the housing. It's common to use them on pumps. Install one that fits and see if that works.
