Can anything be done for this tree? And i mean other than the obv things like putting a cable in or hacking off the the whole freakn side of the tree. The HO REALLY wants to keep her tree. I told her I would see what I could come up with but told her it doesn't look good for mr. maple.

Thought for a second there you were calling your customer a HO!

Not sure I'd advise 'cable-ing', as you'll be pretty much responsible for it for life. The tree is going to come apart, and I hope noone has anything important under it when it goes.

I reccomend taking it out, and having them plant something else in its place.

I told her the cable was def a no guarantee deal and that I dont think its the solution. I also pointed that if/when it fails, the damage SHOULD be minimal. There is a one car garage under that side of tree. She said she is willing to take some risk in order to keep the tree awhile longer. I don't believe I would ever have a liability issue here. She is pretty cool and I highly doubt she would give me trouble later. If the tree does happen to do enough damage to warrant getting her ins company involved, would the presence of a cable or two and maybe a crown reduction prove that she "new about the problem" and give the ins company a way out from paying up.

I should explain about "minimal damage"....she thought it would make her garage into tooth picks. It wont. thats what i told her. It may put some holes in the roof and damage some siding. maybe even crack some rafters or the top plate of the side wall. I didnt say.. "dont worrie about it" ..just telling her the facts as best I can. like I said, she LOVES this tree.

"Cables are a mechanical device that have been known to fail." My mentor use to say, its not a bad idea either to get something in writing that your not responsible if/when it fails.
