I know a pacific northwestern native should know my acers, but is this one a maple or oak? (attached photo) Let me know if you need bark or whole tree shots. Thanks.

Hmmm looked on leafsnap, couldn't find an exact match. Don't have any of my books with me either at the moment.Will check my books when I get home. Let's see some bark!

I was pretty sure it was a maple, but I got about 5 of you on the sweet gum wagon. I thought sweet gum bark was smooth but it must have ridges. I think you guys are right on. Thanks everyone.

Just somthing to remember there are only 5 trees with opposite buds, Maple, Ash,Dogwood, Buckeye, Horse chestnut.
And an easy way to rember the 5 trees, Mad bucking horse.
All other trees have alternate buds
Looks like a gum to me too

Don't forget to add royal paulownia (http://www.arboristsite.com/arborist-101/186543.htm) to your opposite list. I've learned this rule as MADCAPHorse --> maple, ash dogwood, caprifoliacea (honeysuckles, virburnums, etc.), and horsechestnuts.
