Some of you may remember the big maple I cut earlier this year.
I decided its time to make something with it.
Here is a preview of the small elliptical table I've started on.

55 x 28 x 18 high

2 x 4 steel tubing legs to be painted "almost black" when finished

partly sanded with some mineral spirits to show the figure

Very Nice! The wife and I were just talking about intergrating a steel frame with a big slab like that to make some picnic tables. Looks very good done up like that:cheers:

I'm probably gonna fill the knot on the far side with epoxy. The near side bark inclusion will get super glue or soaked in epoxy to harden it and be left open.

Its pretty light for its size and not that big at 55 x 28 inches. I can pick it up without too much straining. Silver maple is fairly light wood, nothing like the white oak I've been cutting lately - that stuff is HEAVY.

The tree had been standing dead for a while, so partly dried when I cut it. This part of the main trunk is sound and without rot. The bad parts became firewood or trash. The slab has been air drying since February and likely not perfectly and scientifically dry but plenty dry enough to work with. Moving it into my 45% humidity shop didn't make it do anything funny. All the maple I've cut has dried well and without much drama.

awesome. My wife has been wanting me to make one of those. Problem is I would need a longer bar and we all know how much those are.
