I ordered a tachometer from my stihl dealer to tune my 353 & 372xp. While i was their my dealer said not to tune my saws to the max rpm, and if i did i would break the crank, is this so?

I asked him why this would happen, he said while cutting the saws would get to hot.

I think this dealer was telling you in an abbreviated manner that you run the risk of tuning too lean if you rely solely on the tach. Search this forum for "carb tuning" and you will have more than you can imagine to read.

Why would the factory reccomend a setting that would destroy their saw. Oh I forgot he's a Stihl dealer and their saws won't hold up like the Huskys will. Later Butch

If you're adjusting a new saw his advise would make sense. As it breaks in the rpms will increase as much as 1000 rpm. Also don't hold it wide open no load for more then a few seconds, just long enough to get a reading, then back it down to make the adjustment.

also andy ,,as ive learned the hard way.. the best way,,jmo,to get u max rpm ,is to hook up u tach.. then put it in hardwood the size of u bar.. wih good cut set up[sharp].t his is the only max rpm figure that matters to me..
course u can just set the saw so it cuts good an strong..
by the way if u talkin new saws ,,how are u adjusting them anyway..:)

I set mine to 13000 after break in like the book calls for and when I tried to cut it fell flat on its face. I started backing the rpm's off till it started cutting real strong then checked the rpm with my tach. 12400 is what showed. Un real how much differance 600 rpm can make.

eric ..that is exactly what i found to be true..except with dans saw..his u just leave at 14000 and dont worry about hardwood pulling it dn much..:)

Adjusting the high speed mixture for max rpm will probably give a setting that is too lean, and run too hot, and probably be lower on power in the cut. Most people set to something under the max rpm.

:) :) u had us worried for a bit there bud..thot u had leaned it out to much.. sounds like u got that thing just about rite..good luck..
