What do you guys think about doing some milling with this one, once I get 'er spinning like a top? Getting this as a bit of upgrade from my old 555 that needs some work. Will be my biggest cc (and weight too) saw so far. And... How big a hardwood tree dia might one consider felling with this one? 61 cc I think. Has a 20" bar at the moment. - Paul

If you are milling 4"x4" posts out of 7" pine logs you should be okay. Don't mean to crap on Joe's ad, but the Mac 650 is not really a milling saw.

If it were me, I would start getting parts saws, and having parts as backups.
Guido is correct, not a milling saw, but if you use it as one, stuff will break.
As milling is hard on a saw.

Milling is hard on a saw due to the lengthy cuts and resultant heat buildup. Oiling can also be an issue and you may need an auxiliary oiler on your mill. Having owned everything from a Granberg mill to a Frick 01 circular mill, I would rather just pay someone with a good band mill to cut lumber for me.

Now someone buy the saw...

I was thinking the PM 650 was basically a modified PM 610 that put out more HP and PM 610 + 605 parts interchange. If so I'm sure there is a ton of used saws that can be used for parts. They don't sell for much not running around here. I picked up a couple runners this Spring at an auction. I was going to clean them up and fine tune them, then resell them for $100 to 125 each depending how well I equip them with bar and chains. Not running I have bought and sold them $5 to $50ish. Thinking may be keeping 1 for a loaner saw as another option.

Good info guys. I bought the saw above and it looks to be in good shape! Haven't had time to start it up yet but happy about this deal. Now that I have it, if anyone had a parts saw pro mac 650, very cheap, or key parts that go bad, do let me know as that would be nice to have sometime. I already have a pro mac 555 smaller cc one not running great yet, so can share bar/chains with it.

I've been using my little 42 cc Poulan for milling so far!! Yes, it can be slow, but it can go through 12" wide boards! Most of its use was 6-8" wide but up to 6 feet long. With a good well cut milling chain on it, and muffler mod on it, that I now know how to do thanks to this site, it can do suprisingly well. I suspect this higher horsepower 610 in the 650 will do a good deal better than that, even if speed is less than the newer Poulan, torque is much higher with the promac. I'll probably keep one chain for milling and one for normal tree cutting between the two pro macs I have once I get it all running good. I'll give it a go with the milling. If I need more, may still get a different saw later on for milling. No worries! My milling is top down mini-mill and hobbyist woodworker use only, so occasional. I find it really fun to do though and very addictive! So far, some Dogwood (really nice stuff), Hawthorne (super hard and dense wood), Spalted Ash, Silver Maple, and a rare Plum tree, all milled with my little 42 cc Poulan! (Did take a while). I'm loving this website AND the people in it. Great guys here like the OP of this deal. Many thanks! - Paul
