I am new to this site.
I ran into a problem with my Mac 10-10S, the fuel tank started leaking.
Separated the tank and the gasket seemed to have gone bad, or dried out.
Is there a source for this gasket or a gasket eliminator that will work. I tried Loctite 515 gasket eliminator and let it cure for about 12 hours. About an hour after I put gas in it the leaking started again. Afterwards I was told that LocTite 515 should set for 72 or more hours before using it with gasoline.

I bought this saw a few months before McCulloch went out of business.

I recently had the same problem with my 10-10.

I tried several products but this is the one that worked. I bought mine from an Auto Zone but I noticed that Wally mart has it now too. This stuff looks and smells like a gooey super glue and dries clear.

It is resistant to gas and alcohol which is important where I am since our pump gas is 10% ethanol.

Good luck.

Go to your local auto parts store and get a roll of gasket material.
Take one half of your tank and spread some grease on the gasket surface.
Lay it on the material and carefully remove.
Now you have a pattern.
Use a razor knife and cut yourself a new gasket.

Is the original gasket for this made of cork?

I have one with the same problem, dried up and gone hard. I've never gotten round to trying to fix it as one of the starter dogs has broken out of the flywheel too, so I'd be looking for a replacement flywheel before going after the gasket.

I tried making the thin cork gasket for my first 10-10 without much luck. I ended up finding a new one for too much $.

But since then I found that Pematex makes a solvent resistent Anaerobic gasket maker. It is found at most any auto parts.

I used it on the fuel tank on my Super XL 925 that was leaking fuel into the oil tank.

I also just last week used it on the same thin cork type gasket on the fuel tank cover on a Poulan 306A. The gasket was torn. The 306 uses the same tank cover and gasket setup as the 10-10.

Now I have used this stuff only to coat gaskets, but its said to be reccomended to be used alone also.

I keep a tube of Seal All in the shop at all times also, but it is really a glue that I wouldnt use if you think you might ever want to remove the tank cover again.

Dan.
Where are you located. I have a couple extra FlyWheels here that will fit your saw. Bruce. My email address is [email protected]

What is the Permatex part number?? LocTite 515 is also anaerobic gasket eliminator, but I was told that it would take about 72 hours to cure. I finally got the gasket surface cleaned up from the first attempt, but I had only let it cure for 12 hours.
The original was a THIN and NARROW cork gasket, If Lawnmowertech37 can find a replacement gasket that would be simpler.

good news the local dealer im planning on getting the mac parts from has 9 of them on his shelf supposly the inventory list he gave me is current and correct

price wise i dont know how much it will be depending on what he sales them for but i will take and tell him to deduct the price from what i owe for his complete inventory if i not mistaken someone else needed the same gasket so i may as well get 2 of them for starters

i will get back with you on the cost thanks

calvin

at least you know i have my hands on one

Sorry I think I threw the package away, I'll look later to see for sure. The tube just says Anaerobic gasket maker on it.

This gasket was also the thin and narrow gasket, and was pretty hard. I had fuel in this tank in less than a couple hours and its good to go.

One thing I have learned about these old Mac 10 series(got a 10-10, PM700 and an 850) and their fuel tank/fuel cap gaskets:

  • Fill the tank up.
  • Let it leak all over. Don't worry...you want this! It will fill up the carburetor/air cleaner box(Find a good gasoline leak friendly spot to fill your tank, like near where you want to cut or somewhere where a little bit of gas spilled is not going to be trouble) Just let it make a mess. Dump out the flood in your air cleaner box into your fuel can if you want to try to fire your saw right off or just leave it until the next day (recommended). It can affect your mixture settings so keep a Tweaker screw driver handy if you are impatient and wan to run ASAP.
  • Turn the saw over so it leaks out of the gas cap too. Let it make more of a mess.
  • Walk away from it. Have a beer or ten. Watch some Top Gear or whatever.
  • Go to bed.
  • Come back the next day to your what you thought was your leaky saw.
  • Refill. Cut wood.
  • Walla! The gaskets swelled up and decided to seal!
  • Happy day!
  • Once that happens you can joyously throw some wood chips and wake up your neighbors with your 10 series roar! Saves you a tank rebuild because any gasket you replace will do the same stuff. Thing about Cork. If you do replace the gasket, soak em with some motor oil first. Cork gaskets need constant POL exposure to stay swollen and sealing, which is why they are on car oil pans. Otherwise they wilt and leak. Old macs tend to sit and sit until someone gets a wild hair so you can count on those gaskets to leak every time. Even if they sit 3-4 months. They were made to be run and run hard.....which few folks do these days!

I'm going to try and make one out of cork gasket paper for my parts saw 10-10s..

I was lucky enough to have a decent one on my original which I copied onto some paper. I wish I would have used card stock though, as it would have been much easier to trace. I'm going to try and get some, and recopy the paper copies to it.

I sealed the original on both mating surfaces with yamabond, and hasn't leaked yet.

Use seal all. End of problem. If you want to take it apart again, I've never had a problem taking the old sealer off.

I clicked on this thread thinking I have one of those somewhere and realised that I'd commented on it 5 years ago!

Still have the saw somewhere, still has the same problems. Sounds like a good tip though WAMcC I might try that when the weather is warmer.
