I just finished putting together the sp125 and tried running it. At first it would only run at midd throttle and backfire then cut off. I took the starter housing of and checked the coil and wires going to it and all was fine. I then started it again and it ran like it should have. Does anyone have any other ideas to what may have caused the sporadic running of the saw. I also took a compression test after only running the saw for about 15 minutes and it had 175 PSI in which I was very happy to see..

Sounds like you're going through what I did with my SP125. I found a NOS McCulloch "Universal Coil Kit" on eBay that replaces just the coil, not the laminations, and that seems to have fixed it, but I haven't had much time to test it, yet. It was a bit tricky to get the old coil off the laminations because they had been JB Welded on, but I got em off a bit at a time. If you check McBob's website, http://www.users.bigpond.com/ozflea/saws.html he has a do it yourself electronic ignition retrofit page on there, you could try something like that.

A little secret, the coils used on the SP 125 are also the ones used on the 10 series saws, not rare at all.

I don't really know what the problem was, could have been a loose wire or the points not closing due to a tiny bit of grit or something.
