Hi, I am new to the forum, and am an avid Mac person. I still cut with a Mac, and have a site up at http://puresimplicity.net/~heviarti/macsaw.html
I'm looking for resources or help beyond what I've already located. I'm in bad need of parts for my 1-71, most notably a set of 55123 piston rings. My site lays out all the parts I need, and others are welcome to post to the site. I'm also thinking of starting a mailing list, but don't know yet if I want to make it Mac specific or all saws..

I look forward to seeing some new faces in this thread..

Very cool saw (1-71) Looks a lot like my 797. How do they cut as compared to a modern saw?

I have a 797..and want another one to put on a short blade for kicks. Its a powerful thing. Easy starter. Not nearly as heavy as I expected when I was first looking. A 20inch blade on that 797 would make for fun & games when I'm cutting with a few friends with their modern saws. (We help each other out cutting firefwood for the winter off my place)

The bore on your 1-71 is 2.125 same as my 1-45. I'm also looking to find piston & rings. Should you find a source please drop a PM.

Any one ever try to retro some modern Motorcycle pistons back to these old saws? They are flat top design's and some seem to be piston port design. Bet there is a mix and match out there some where. Would probably need resleeving by someone like Kustom Kraft. Most bikes are metric so there would be no direct cross-over for bore size and wrist pin size. (Who is active with vintage motorcycle's and almost any other type two stroke)

There are some distinct differences between a 797 and a 1-71. first, I don't have a cube carb, I was running a mac carb, but the proper carb is a tillotson hr or he. You've got a pule oiler, 1-71 does not. There is no DSP on a 1-71 at all. The only feature it *doesn't have* that i want is the pulse oiler.

When it was still running wore out with a bad carb I outcut an 064 stihl with it by 1/3 of the log's width.same person sharpened both chains.

I'll be putting my 1-80 back to work soon, and desperately need to find half inch chain.

GD: I'll try them. I'm starting a master list of old mac part people on my parts book binder.

As to the rings I just found someone today with rings seals and bearings. With those an the last two gaskets I need to locate, my 1-71 will be ready to go

I am trying to get enough people together to get Jorde Decals interested in making mac decals for us.they do decals for John Deere two cylinders, but there's sort of some crossover there, at least in my world.. My family used to own an implement company here, and dealt both John Deere and mac. We mainly did smaller saws, and all the pro stuff went to Banks, to Hall's saw shop. unfortunately Bill Hall deep-sixed his junkpile before I got really deep into macs... Back when it was just me and Chewy..

Some folk down the street called someone to take their tree down, but didn't arrange to have it bucked and yarded... I got all the wood from this 70 foot ponderosa. The father/son team that fell the tree looked at me like I was nuts when I started bucking that tree up with my old geardrive.

if u out cut an 064... in my opinion it goes to knowing your tool ...which in my opinion is at least 50 percent of performance,in any tool comparisom..
i keep tools that work for me ,,as long as i can ...for that reason...good luck with u new site..

Let me tell you buddy, it's a hard road to hoe being a real mac enthusiast. I catch alot of hell over my macs. I don't know how many times I've heard "boat anchor" and the like. What these folks don't realize is that most of my saws have taken 40 years of abuse, and it's amazing they run like they do. I have yet to see a stihl you can chip out from 6 inches of ice and run.

That's all about to change. I'm 2 50032B away from having located all the stuff I need to put my 1-71 right.:blob2: Next is my 1-80. A little bit of work, and all my saws will be tip-top again.

Next, I need to find a big Mac. At the top of the list are a 73 or 77, super 797, 790 or an SP125, or even a 125c. The geardrives wouldn't do it, but I need something to embarass modern saws with, and also to be large and imposing. I occasionally get to do a job where a big saw would be handy. Plus, I think i can get an SP125 or such for less than the $750 my buddy paid for his husky 3120xp.. and have a torquier, tougher saw.

I'm seriously considering doing a mailing list.. however I haven't heard enough feedback from people to know what format they want.. it's either going to be vintage saw or mac only.
and if you haven't yet, look over my site.. it's linked from the first post.

It's good to know there are other mac enthusiasts out there. Do we have an event anywhere?

That is a great site you have there! Really enjoyed it I'm mostly a Pioneer saw collector but I've moved into macs too. I have a Pro Mac 55 that I'm totally rebuilding. A Power mac 6 and a 3-25. The PM6 is a nice runner good power for its size. The 3-25 is going to take a while to restore will have to find a parts saw for it. I use my old saws as well and they work like new. Most folks are much too impatient to use an old saw. I prefer slow and steady torque over a screamin plastic saw:D

I wouldn't mind having a Vintage McCulloch get together at my farm. (ONLY a vintage saw get together..no comercial stuff..just fun & games for enthusiasts enjoying their projects; not trying to promote & sell new stuff) We have a couple of hundered acres and over 100 are hard woods maples, cheery, locust, poplar, and elm. We have to maintain and cut constantly...I could provide a field to play in, A tractor to skid 18-24 inch wood for smaller saws, and 4-5ft diameter wood for the big ones. We could make a day of cutting a couple of tree's, dragging them up and messing with saws for the rest of the day on those logs. All you McCulloch guys have to provide is the enthusiasts, food, good McCulloch saws & stories & information, and good company. (I have my plastic saw and appreciate it but I have no interest in them as a hobby)

My two most worked saws are a Husky 365 & Homelite Super XL (My first vintage project)(They are worked dayly). The McCulloch's are being built to replace the Homelite and husky for my primary working saws. I eventually want to retire my Homelite's for comperable McCullochs of similar age, condition, and performance. (when my 1-45 is done....)

you've got cherry wood, but do you have a woodpecker. sorry folk, they keys on my sparc's keyboard are going. i'm without return or shift. i don't know where i'm going to find a new type 5 in emmett, id.

weime; i notice you have no jd two cylinders listed. why? are they scarce there also, i think an acre of corn and a cow or hog would likely feed the whole group.. i don't know how i'd get out there, as i am a broke mofo. cherry wood is very expensive right now. there is almost none for sale by comparison. i may have some friends in that part of the country.. i think 'dro's wife is from that area.

pioneer; i had a 3-25. i gave it to my buddy, danny the two-stroke god. how is the power mac 6, i've been wanting one. is yours the early or late pm6
also, how is the promac 55 the local pawnshop has one with a bar i was thinking of ganking for my 6-10

again, i apologize for the lack of capital letters and question marks. my type4 is dying. have to go farm now... we've got a crop of black beans in.

I wish you wern't so far away. I would like to come to a McCulloch or vintage saw get together. I have a mac 35,super33, mac-15,super 44,1-41,1-10,two 610's,pro mac850,a 99 that needs a carb, and a sp125 about 50% completly rebuilt. I was collecting macs before collecting macs was cool.

Keep me informed I know I can't make it this year but maybe next year.
Thanks

Guess I can't exclude an XL-12...I cut with one here! hippocracy.

Maybe something like only pre-1980 saws? Maybe pre-1975?

What is concidered "vintage"? Is in based on Years or Techology ?

Thats another reason to have a get together, define the definition of vintage saws.

At our old saw contest in Baraboo Wisconsin, we have a vintage direct drive class. Anything before 1980 can run if it is stock. We had a good representation from most manufacturers last year. McC 125's, Homie 750, 090, husky 100, Wright. It's a fun class to watch, all the big boys from each company.

we'd prolly have to have a few classes.. one for gear drive, one for direct... prolly a modified class, and there'd probably be break for safety equipment, pre- and post- chainbrake... pretty much to about 1972, then the newer saws [to 1980 or so] would be a year break. honestly, i wouldn't consider a promac 700 vintage.. i was a kid in the 80s and everyone was cutting with them.. but if we want to consider it vintage that's cool. i sure don't want to see peeople left out, and even though I really like my macs, it might be nice to see some other companies' big offerings.

i am sporting my new avatar, which i hope doesn't cause any confusion with scott.

so, how many here have owned or own power mac 6s?

i've been considering one for some time. again, someone is telling me i can't cut with a mac. I can't wait till my rebuild is done. I have a feeling I won't hear bad things about mac for some time.

in other news the beans are irrigating.. also, anyone want a polydactyl cat?

Hooray!! shift is back... now maybe enter will be next..

Its a light little saw all metal seems to have good power. I need to get a new bar and chain then I can really see what it will do. I'll tell you it has a sound all its own sounds bigger than it really is. I'd say its an earlier one it has the round aluminum front handle dont know if that makes it earlier or not. I cant find any serial #'s on so not real sure.

I've never ran the 55 just got it cheap off ebay and i'm doing a total rebuild on it. It should be a real nice saw when I'm done. I'd grab that one if you like it, they have a decomp valve too for easier starting.

Scott,

Do you have a flyer or entry form ? What are the entry fees ? I have it on my calendar and hope I can make it. It all depends on how badly I get smoked at Steve's race. I will probably get my butt kicked in July so I may be too embarrassed to show my face in Baraboo.

Bill
