Last July, I moved to Medford, Oregon, and had to cancel a class at Portland Community College.

I noticed that Medford has virtually zilch for tree or landscape programs. So I sent an outline for a tree care class - community education - at Rogue Community College in the Grants Pass / Medford area.

The course was accepted and is scheduled for WINTER term, a few months away.

It will cover about 40% of the kind of content similar to the ISA study guide material. But this class will add some elements of landscape design, and a more in depth approach to soil and drainage.

So it's a cross between tree care and landscape technology material. 4 weeks of Mondays from 7 to 9 at night for $60.

It will be pro quality material - not just some homeowner class. If you know any tree companies or landscapers in the south Oregon area with employees that could benefit, tell them to check winter enrollment at RCC or to watch the web site for Rogue Community College online.

I hear they are checking into a grant to try and revive some landscape related credit classes in some kind of program.

It's a dry area for horticulture education down here, so any enrollment in these programs can assist reviving tree and landscape education at a county or region level in southern Oregon.

Way to go, Mario. I hope the cc pays you enough to dcover some prep and expenses. Post flyers abouut the course at saw shops, garden centers, etc.

Good Luck; tell us how it goes!

Medford, Oregon

Medford, Oregon...hey Mario, isn't that where Ken Kesey( One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) moved to after tripping around in the S F Bay area?

I'm not sure...

I do know that Walt "somebody" that wrote Gentle Ben (basis for the TV show 35 years back) lived along the Willamette River near Wilsonville south of Portland, Oregon.

:)

actually, he lived just outside eugene, oregon. here's a little fact for you, he never once saw the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest cuz he thought they butchered his book. You should rent Sometimes a great notion. There is some good falling in that movie done by my friends dad.

No ????? thats a great movie. I like it when they start tossing dynamate at the guys in the boat. and when paul newman cut the guys desk in half. There were two brothers in my home town; Pumpkin and Roddy P. they co owned a canoe. One day Pumpkin wanted to borrow it, Roddy said "no i'm going fisshin today." So Punkin cut the canoe in half. Guess he likes Paul Newman to.

Hey, if you like Sometimes a great notion, check out "Dead River Rough Cut" it will be hard to find, but its "the most requested video at the maine state prison." Heres a website www.oldfilm.org Its well worth the 30 bucks or whatever.

and hey, welcome to the forum :)

thanks for the welcome! Personally, my favorite part in Somtimes a Great notion is when that guy is pinned under the tree and the tide is rising so Newman has to give him mouth to mouth, but the guy can't keep from laughing cuz its like they're kissing! well, its sad and funny at the same time, cuz he dies of course. I will definately track down that movie, thanks!

Mario to fill seats you'd do well to promote it yourself, yeah, you can be humble while you do. I'm lecturing at a university urban forestry class that is far from full and half the class trickles in late...don't get me started. I'm getting ceu's assigned by the local ISA chapter, and pesticide credits from the state and inviting all of those folks too.

So....

I got an email from Rogue Community College yesterday with a request to do the class in spring. I thought it was a cancel and reschedule.

It turns out that the man at RCC did not know the enrollment numbers, but said that he got a lot of phone calls about the class - enough to repeat it on the next schedule. He's not in the enrollment dept., but puts together the course schedules.

So RCC's request is to not only teach the February class, but to offer and teach it again.

I also submitted a course outline for a landscape design class for spring too.

This ought to be interesting to see how the big picture plays out.

Hey, could you give more info about the class, when it is and what youll be teaching. sounds interesting. i dont know how far RCC is from here, but i've heard of people commuting there.

I finally removed the info page from my own web site, but here is the specific page for the class on Rogue Community College's web site.

I think the RVC refers to the Riverside Center in downtown Medford.

R.C.C. Tree Class in Medford Info Page

It's probably only a 30 minute commute from Grants Pass or 20 minutes from Ashland.

4 weeks

(first post in the thread :) )

4 weeks seemed like a good length to intitiate a class and see what the response is. I didn't want to go for 11 weeks and find out that only one or two people show up. They don't cancel community ed classes for low enrollment. This way, whether there is one person or a dozen, I'll be glad to drive and teach for 4 weeks.
