Man, yesterday brought back memories. The company I work for has a set of climbing gear they share, my gear was all at home. I only had to go up 20 feet to set a rope for rigging one branch off the house. The company gear doesn't have a split tail at all, just one climbing rope, one carabiner on the bridge and the saddle.

Would you believe I couldn't even remember how to tie the rope to the 'biner, and then tie a blakes or tautline hitch? No micro-pulley as a hitch tender to go up, once I was tied in to one crotch for safety to go up, then realized if I wanted to change crotches I'd have to retie the whole flippin' thing.....

Some things are best left as memories......

Yeah, us old school boys know the tried and true.

I still climb on a Blake's every now and then, just to keep in practice. I carry a second prusik on my harness in case i want to use a second tie in, but sometimes I'll use the tail of my rope and just go Blake's. You don't even need a beener if your harness has a ring on it. Can be a bit of fun, or if you didn't have a second prusik and would of had to wait for someone to send you up one then it saves a little time and frees the guys on the ground to get on with dragging. I think everyone ought to know how to tie one. Could get you out of a jam someday!

I was thinking that while I was struggling. Just one of those "What if..." emergency scenarios. I want to say you should be climbing with a figure 8 as well. And know how to use it. Just in case your climbing hitch fails, you still have a way to get out of the tree, either the blakes, or figure 8.

I didn't post up to complain about the situation, it just makes my head hurt that there are so many simple things to do that would make that system faster. Even just a split tail and hitch tender would be 100% better, in my opinion. Theres nothing wrong with a blakes. But, yeah, I felt a little stupid standing there trying to remember how to tie a knot.
