Old blue
I mill it into slabs first and then when I get down to project time I cut what I can out of each slab for the most use due to the bends and such of the wood. This is not unusually large but not a small tree by any means for mesquite. Much of it has been grubbed out or cut out as a weed around here. It grows in a twist so is a paint to dry I cut thick and mill down. Very hard wood. I also mill live oak which grows and dries the same. This batch turned or to be about half rustic quality and half FAS to my eye. Will get more pics up some time tomorrow.
I do know about the stickers, there is a bend in the upper log worth of wood that I wanted to support but yes I need to re stack and sticker this was a surprise batch of wood text from fried… " you want it before I haul it off and burn it?" Was scavenging stickers.
Here are some pics of the grain. This particular wood get some pretty bad cracks and gaps but the trick is to stabilize them with black epoxy which blends quite nicely with the rest of the mineral and sap streaking once finished. As it ages and takes uv rays it darkens like cherry but to a more deep red brown. The pieces in the crotch I am hoping to use on the new master bedroom headboard as well as the live oak posts in the last pics this tree was dead standing killed by drought 2 yrs ago. I have found that although hard LO is more stable milled in this manner.
Nice mesquite, kf. Do you ever run across any old weathered mesquite fence posts up your way? I'm in Georgetown, and we like to use them for adirondack chair legs, but I'm having a hard time finding any around here. Jeff
No haven't run across any that I know of Jeff, not much wood fence left around here that isn't cedar. Was wondering if there were any forum members "near me" I've got eyes all over telling me about wood… lots of road and new home construction within 20-30 mi of here!
Long time lurker wanting to get into some milling. I am in southern Oklahoma. West if Lawton alittle but I work in Crockett right now. Love seeing that mesquite milled. We have tons of the stuff up here. I like ur bed idea. I built my sons crib and baby dresser out of it. Will try to show some pics. Finishes beautifully.
