Just got back from a couple of weeks down south. Despite the pyramids, surf, beer, and touring; I was still getting lost looking at trees and trying my espanol at the saw shops.

Hit Mexico city, Oaxaca, and Puerto Escondido. All in all it was cool, not a lot of our style of tree care, but a fair appreciation of trees and tolerance for tree problems. Of course the Arbol del Tule was a highlight. But the Indian Laurels in Oaxaca city were magnificent too. I was impressed by the amount of green space in urban areas.

I tried to cut back on the pics, enjoy.

I think the "vine that strangles the palms" you were reffering to is actually a tree called the Strangler Fig, or Ficus Aurea.

We had them down in Fort Lauderdale.

some beautiful trees down there...thanks for the pics!

Great pics. Thanks.

We were down to Little Corn Island off the coast of Nicaragua in January. I didn't see any trees like that, but I did see what I think is the only chainsaw on the island.

Pablo and his MS 360. I told him to tighten the chain...but I don't think he understood.

Wouldn't it be great if you could live there and make a living? I did live in Phoenix for two years back in the late 80's.
It was so cool waking up to nice weather. Trimmed and peeled palm trees in the daytime and drove a cab at night.

Rode a motorcycle to the end-laws on Christmas morning in shorts and a tank top. Man I miss Phoenix alot.

Yes, strangler fig, that is it! Funny Dan, now that you mention it, I seem to remember seeing one in the mall growing up in MT. Interesting how it works its way down from the top in live trees. Reminds me of a mummy.

I was a little suprised by the "feeling" of safety down there. I was definitely alert and a bit more defensive (of the G.F.) but aside from petty street crime I saw nothing sketchy. Some punk stole my shirt with 40 pesos, on the beach, but that wouldn't suprise me on the Oregon Coast. Of course I read somewhere that Mexico City averages 2 kidnappings a day. Most of the craziness is on the border, thugs killing thugs and occaisionally innocents and cops.

Drank some mexcal and even made the mistake of bringing some home with 2Kilos! (of coffee)

JPS I should have taken some pics of the foundation for future illustrations, doh! It would have been a great example.

I wonder if Nicaragua is getting US saws? All the stihls I saw were older boxy models. I think they were made in Brazil too, but that may have been just the bars. No 020's or 200t's available in the catalogue I saw, just a 192.

-Oh I forgot, the real Highlight was definitely Lucha Libre in Mexico City on a friday night.

Mostly they have the old models that do not comply with emission standards. I would think an MS200 way to pricey for the market. Though I hear you can still get a 090 in a few of those countries.
