Midsummer 2012

Each Midsummer the Finns desert the cities and towns and head countryside by some lake. There'll be a beach and a sauna for everyone in this country. This year I drove my family to a place called Rautalampi.

This is the sauna for us. The way I like it: Old and modest.

There's the Delaware memorial by the town church. I took a picture of it just in case.

The writing says: FOR THOSE BACKWOODS PIONEERS WHO LEFT RAUTALAMPI IN 16TH AND 17TH CENTURIES TO THE WOODS OF MID SWEDEN AND FROM THERE TO AMERICA. ERECTED IN 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF DELAWARE COLONY 3RD OF JULY 1938 BY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF RAUTALAMPI

First we did some firewood charity cutting. Here's a sisweel á la Tarzan. I've found it great for the smaller trees (Kreegah, Tantor bundolo!).

Well, this time it didn't rip the stump, but more like pulled the fibers. It did the work anyway. The birch wanted to go straight towards the house, it swang just enough to miss the strawberry field, which I didn't want to destroy this time. Mission accomplished.

Our Midsummer bonfire at midnight. Sorta witchcraft. Hard to explain, but it's mandatory up here.

It is a good thing to keep traditions alive. The sauna/cabin is very nice.
Here, we have lost nearly all of our traditional holidays to rampant commercial interests. Anymore, a holiday has become an excuse to get drunk.

The bonfire is a nice touch, my ancestors did something similar, but they usually tossed someone in the fire.

I've never understood (and consequently never used) the sisawheel. The concept seems simple enough, and I've used angled snipes with narrow face cuts for a little kick for similar effect. This one looks straightforward enough, but I've seen a few pics where the holding wood was left fat on the opposite side of the hinge from what I would have expected. Does the stem rotate/twist on the way down? Can someone break it down for me?

Usually no. When a forest fire warning is given to a province, the law says something like no open fires allowed. Well, the law doesn't define exactly which is an open fire and which is not. And there's no surveillance of that law, for very obvious reasons. So it's really up to yourself how to make sure that you won't start another wildfire. A fire pit is one option if you think that's necessary in a given place and time.

Yep, and i thought that here might not be too much of Us at all.

I did get wasted as its tradition too , but also played with chainsaw to fabricate few stools or benches from old logs, swetted in sauna for hours and also in hot tub,whittled a lot of spoons and forks etc with new knives, had barbeque, shot some cans, and such, nothign special.

By the way, i like the "Mulqvist" in your profile, how did u get it :msp_confused:

My grandmother was from Finland (Vassa Lanni). While I regret not learning the language, I can't wait until the day I can visit Finland. I was planning a trip before the U.S. economy went south (and stayed south).

I have a sauna in the back yard that keeps me close to my Finnish roots. There is no better escape from day-to-day drudgery than to go sauna with a olut or two.

Half Finnish here...as one of the youngest of my generation, all I learned of Finnish was paska and perkele and a few adjectives to go along with them

Since this is a logging forum:

The story goes my grandfather was considered quite the lady's man in his day, and the other Finnish immigrant loggers in Minnesota got tired of him always getting the new girls in town.

They had another logger who wanted to move to New York City.

So the other loggers bought two one-way tickets, got my grandfather seriously passed-out drunk (how much alcohol that would take in a early 20th century logging camp full of Finns I can't imagine ). When he finally re-gained consciousness, first thing he asked the other logger was where they were. The companion looked out the train window, and turned back to him, "Pennsylvania."

What a story! Well, I can understand the very reason why they wanted to send your grandfather away from the camp. Man's excessive luck in terms of reproductive activities can really bug you off. Not to mention that the citizens of the town will eventually be calling for some logger's blood.

You can modify your title, it will cost you 150 credit points. Yes, that's what those credits are for. Go to your profile and click on Market - Purchases - Forum Items - Edit Title. You're able to pick any title you wish. Just write it in the box.

That is cool. Here, We have to have our fires in a fire pit and if we don't we have to have a burn permit which we have to buy for a one time use and after that use we have to buy another one. You save A LOT of money keeping it in the fire pit.

There will be some Scandihoovian Candle burning on the 4th here. We gather at a friend's house that borders the football field where the fireworks are set off. We sometimes get hit by little shrapnel pieces.
There won't be any accordian music, or wrestling, but we will probably have a member or two of the local group called The Jumping Tree Snails playing guitar, mandolin, and ..........banjo.
