Buying a house, it's got this oak tree, 5 foot DBH.

MIL was horrified at the thought of even cutting it.
Wife's horrified at the thought of living under it.
I'm horrified I don't have an 880.

/edit - and a metal detector

I'm sure you can find someone in the area with a real big saw. There's a 3120 in the trading post right now.

Stuff the big saw - that is a magnificent tree. What you need to do is make some outdoor furniture from some other lumber and park it under that tree, cool some beers and sit under that tree and just drink and marvel at natures way of making big trees.

Nothing beats a cool beverage:cheers: and a big shade tree on a hot day!!
Build a tree-house in it for the kids. If no kids, build it for yourself!
Dennis.

that is a big oak wish i had it in my yard but it is true at that size it is near the end of it's best years. best thing to do is get some tree co's to price taking it down and when the wife and mil see the cost to remove the price of a new ms880 will seem like a bargin to them and your in business.

that tree is like the one in my back yard and I very seriously doubt either of them are a risk or hazard of any kind sep a few small dead limbs nor do I believe that trees of this size are infested or will be infested by termites and are at the end of their best years. My tree is a willow oak (as the one pictured most likely is) and hasn't stopped growing in diameter since I've been here for 14 years...

no way in the world would I cut that down unless it was dead....

I'd love to have a white oak like that in my yard.

+1.

Would be a crime to cut that down if it's live and healthy.

Perhaps the prudent thing to do is have a professional come and evaluate the health of the it to see if it has rot / bugs, or if it is a perfectly healthy tree that should be admired...

I have never cut into one that big that didnt have termite damage to the truck not telling him to cut it down just saying there going to be some damage in there....There is plenty you can do to help hold the damage down but you can almost bet there has been little to stop them in the first place. I know of an oak tree 56in. across with a few thousand bullit holes in it and still a great tree but with the lead and termites and its close to a house I wouldnt want to bet my life on it.(or at least have a pro check it out)
