Hey everybody.

I got home from my job and was going to keep on working on this moped I'm fixing for a friend but it's too dang hot!........I'd rather sit inside with a fan blowing on me and post pics on AS....until later.:D

So anyway I got a chance to mill some walnut two weeks ago at a friends house here in VA..
It was a lightning struck tree that had to be taken down and the tree guy was going to cut it for firewood if nobody wanted it.

..At that point my friend came by and remembered that he and I had talked about my mill and he had been intrigued...So he says he wants the tree and the tree guy was nice enough to cut it in longer lengths and deliver it to my friends house with his bobcat!

So after I got loaded up in the morning ...

This is what I found.

This son of a gun was about 49" across at the other end!

And on to the next.

More.

We were lucky enough to have a tractor to move stuff around with!:rockn:

IMG_1234.JPG

So we grabbed this sucker, set it up on some blocks and got to it.

This was what was inside

Here's me taking a slice off with the 046...And I know! I know! I shouldn't be milling on my knees but I was just too excited to rig up some thing higher.

IMG_1232.JPG

Another with my new aux oiler in good view

IMG_1231.JPG

Then we grabbed this fine fella.

IMG_1235.JPG

Set up the rails.

IMG_1236.JPG

After a slab or two.

IMG_1239.JPG

One more.

IMG_1240.JPG

That one made some nice lumber.

IMG_1241.JPG

At the end of day one. 12 boards at 1 1/8th by 8 and 9 feet.

IMG_1242.JPG

Before calling it a day we set up on this big honker. That's a 28" bar on the 046 for a little scale.

IMG_1247.JPG

We had to trim it down so the uprights on the mill had about a 1/4 inch on each side..and the mill will cut 39" wide.

IMG_1243.JPG

After the first slab.

IMG_1248.JPG

IMG_1249.JPG

The next morning we got going much earlier then the day before.

IMG_1250.JPG

And of course I had to switch to the 2100 for this bigger stuff.
IMG_1251.JPG

Second slab.

IMG_1252.JPG

IMG_1253.JPG

Second slab other side. 2 and 1/4 inch's thick

IMG_1254.JPG

Keeping on...It killed me that we had to trim so much awesome wood off but we had to cut something and before we got into it it looked much more rotten then it was and I was just trying to get what we could out of the chunk.

IMG_1255.JPG

It got nice.:hmm3grin2orange:

IMG_1256.JPG

Sorta scored this a little.

IMG_1257.JPG

IMG_1258.JPG

IMG_1259.JPG

Ok I got 5 more of this piece and then it's on the main trunk!

IMG_1262.JPG

The next one down was jawdropping. I took three pic's of this one.

IMG_1264.JPG

IMG_1265.JPG

IMG_1266.JPG

The other side.

IMG_1268.JPG

All right. Time for the big guy.

IMG_1274.JPG

This thang had some center rot..but we thought nothing to lose right?

IMG_1276.JPG

Looks all right in there after all!

IMG_1281.JPG

The rot started to eat in here after the first real slab

IMG_1286.JPG

Had some real nice grain near the crotch.

IMG_1284.JPG

After the second slab came off.

IMG_1287.JPG

Working our way down...the top is right about 3 feet across right here.

IMG_1290.JPG

I took one more slab off this and we ran out of day light to mill...Of course we still had to stack and sticker all this.

IMG_1295.JPG

Here's half the slabs on some sawhorses...We got six slabs at 9 and a half feet by 2 and 1/4"

IMG_1293.JPG

Well that's it!
If you made it though all those pic's you must be addicted to chainsaw milling!

But anyway i had a blast milling all this up and I ran out of time...There are maybe 4 more logs that came out of the limbs...so,much smaller stuff but def worth milling when I get the time.

All right time to go work on that dang moped!

Take care!
Will

Do you sell it or keep it???

Oh I think we'll be keeping it for now...we both plan on making tables and other things out of it...Maybe sell those

Walnut is great wood, I am being a wimp and waiting until the 95 degree 95 % humidity to drop to mill again-2 months???

I hear ya!
I need to get out and mill some oak this weekend and I am not looking forward to all the chips down the neck and the pants.:(

Guess I'm an addict.......more, more, more photo's!

Great looking logs you had there. Where are you drying them at?

Awesome job.
I have to see at least one pic of the moped you're fixing. :)

I left them all at my buddy's farm. He had some spare barn space.

Great pics, great wood.

Thanks hoss. Last I heard you were waiting on permits to go milling? That come through?

I have to see at least one pic of the moped you're fixing.

You got it. The thing has been beaten on and half assed repaired it's whole life....Oh and it's french.:msp_rolleyes:

Wish me luck.:msp_biggrin:

Nice job milling, how many chains did you go through?

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to having spare chains..just one milling chain and one cross cut chain for each bar length and I had to file the milling chains maybe six times? once on the 28" loop and five times on the 42"..

Thanks for the great pics

and a fresh shot of motivation to finish my latest mill. Some day I hope to be able to mill a little walnut myself. I'm hoping to build a couple of heirloom quality clocks for my kids.

You're livin the dream dude - mill on.
