here's some magnolia milled out today. the butt log was 44" in diameter the slabs are 30" wide 2" thick.milled with a stihl 084 mounted to a alaskan mill

Nice pics, Matt! I had no idea it could grow that big here in NH. Glad you saved it from a worse fate.

there was two of them on a estate the other one was actually larger around 52" but it was just too rotted...we took them apart with a crane and the butt log on the one i milled was 12' long and weighed around 9,000 pounds..i'm hoping to make a kitchen table and sell the rest..i just love the blue color some is very brilliant almost indigo.the arborist called it southern magnolia and i looked it up and they commonly get that big and bigger i have never seen them other than a small ornamental in a garden haha.the wood is soft like poplar but very heavy and it dries very stable..thanks for all the comments guys just figured i would share ..

nice! it looks like mineral stained poplar. sounds like a big magnolia. we get some big rarely do you see them come down.congrats on saving some nice wood.

Thanks for the pic's, I have never seen Magnolia lumber. I have to ask, they grow in NH?

We have some big ones in the DC area, but I've never taken one down. Didn't know the wood was that pretty. Now I'm gonna ask my cousin to keep an eye out for any big ones he takes down, Joe.

thanks guys...i'm planning on some more milling sunday morning so i should have some more pics up in the afternoon..the next log has even more color so it should be interesting
