I have been milling(only two logs) with my 090G.
The question I have is, what do you guys recommend on the gear oil level!
I have been using bar oil in one(Stihl summer) and HD 30W in another.
It calls for 5 OZ. I have been putting 9 OZ. to make sure the gears are getting lube, that is with the power head mounted(gear side down.). I feel this is is working well after measure the volume needed to make sure the gears were passing oil through them off the gear cover. Any thoughts.

Teddy! Wishing I had more time to mill!

Given the manual says HD 30W what's the rationale for using bar oil?
Bar oil is a one pass use oil so I wonder how it would cope with constant pressure? How's the colour of the oil look after milling?

For me it's not only time it's space!

Cheers

Gear oil: Another AS member mentioned that!
I was surprised, it doesn't foam, and held up! I have only put one tank maybe 1 1/2 tanks through it with the bar oil!

As for the space! I am jealous! I have the space but not the time! ERRRR!!!!!!!!

What about the way the saw lays, any opinion?

P.S. Bobl is the master!!

i agree with bob l . my manual says hd 30w, which is what i put in mine. i would be afraid of how the bar oil would hold up. i haven't milled with it yet, i got my mill around the same time 2' of snow fell here. i am intrigued by the thought of extra oil to keep the gear drive lubed in the milling position though. anyone have any thoughts on this? any pitfalls? thanks, bert

Saw laying on its side should be OK, CS are designed to lay on their sides for some time when falling so I can't see a problem there.

As for the master bit, I don't know how anyone that started milling in 2007 can be called a master. In terms of milling mostly I feel like the teacher who is just a couple of pages ahead in the text book than some of the students :dizzy: My main asset is probably my scientific training that enables me to understand materials, processes and machines and to approach problems in a systematic and quantitative manner, but that doesn't replace sheer experience which others here have on me in spades. I also have taught a whole bunch of stuff, ranging from practical stuff like high school photography to college level astrophysics, so I like to think I can explain things reasonable clearly and show/put things from a learners rather than teachers point of view.
