Mini GTG 5-1-12

Myself and Mike had a mini GTG yesterday. Got to run the saws a little and just basically have a good time. However, I will say that if ya get a chance ya really need to run one of Mike's work chains and race chains for that matter. He can seriously file a chain. Hope everyone enjoys the vids.

The first two vids are mine and Mike's ported xpw's with Mike's filed work chain on both. Keep in mind that Mike's xpw has minimal port work done. This vid is the only of Mike's and it ran better than what is showed. It was faster than the 2171 with his own chain. So pretty much Mikes saw with his chain was pretty much neck and neck with my saw with my chain and my stock 2171 with Mikes chain was just a hair behind both of us. Only until I used Mike's chain was i able to pull away from Mike. I think thats pretty significant considering the port work my saw has had compared to his and of course the bone stock 2171 i reckon this thread is more a testement to Mike's killer work chain!

Man, the only way my tree monkey xpw was goona really beat my bone stock 2171 was by usin Mike's filed work chain......thats pretty freakin awesome IMHO......

Thanks Andy! I appreciate that buddy. Man, its just really amazing at what a difference a chain can make. Ya know? Mike was tellin me he can get about 3 tanks in before having to re-file barring not hitting any mud or dirt. And he can certainly make a heckuva good race chain as well. I have a fully thinned race chain, and Mike's race chain beat it by a good margian.

Nice vids, that chain sure does make it cut fast!! I'd like to have some time to look at the chain, and get some pointers from someone who can file like that!

Ask and you shall receive. Well atleast pictures. That chain was ground with the razor sharp and cleaned the gullets out like I do all the work chain. There's nothing special about that chain to me. I have done a few with some thinned rakers and ground way back and they'll flat out smoke those work chains.

The new chains need work to really be better than a good round filed chain. I won't use a new loop unless it slips past me without atleast cleaning the gullets out. The stihl is awful in how much gullet is there. Oregon is a little better but not much.

I had more fun shooting yesterday than running saws. Wish I had brought a few more guns and left the saws at home

Lol, it was a lot of fun. We had s Sig M4 Enhanced and a Weatherby 22-250.
I have a feelin theres gonna start bein more guns and less saws......

It's nice to have a nice chain on a stock saw. It doesn't make your ears hurt running it. That 2171 and a good chain is a fine saw. I still would like to do a little machine work to the xpw.

I need to turn that 3120 into a 300 win mag now and the 2153 into a nice piece of glass for it.:msp_sneaky:

I wish I had a 300 . Ide trade ya Real Quick .
I see you run the top of the cutter a little steeper angle than I do here . That was somethimg I was wondering about . Yours would definately be stronger and stay sharp longer in the hardwood . .
Nice looking grind . . That 390 is sweet .

Yeah I sent one chain for the chain test. That chain on the 24" bar is a work chain. I'm going to do one for hedgerow just like it in whatever driver he needs to try out in hedge. If it will cut it then I think that should put to bed that square won't hold up in hardwood or not.

I know chisel ground works great in birch at 50 below . But even if its hard birch its still sorter than rock maple ' white ash or oak .

Hedgerow the member on here. He cuts a lot of hedge thats real hard in his part of the country. He's never tried any square on it.

Pretty neat log holder ya got there. Really enjoyed the vids----puts alot of truth in the saying that a sharp chain is the first and best mod you can do on a saw.

Yeah the back hoe makes it easy to hold logs and cut. A real sharp chain makes it easier and faster of a load of firewood.
