It was such a beautiful spring day, how could I resist playing hookie and doing some milling ? Still too much snow and mud to access the forest, but I have a few small logs on site that need to be milled.
These two ponderosa pine logs are destined to become cants, to be used in speed tests. The Oly 980 was all ready to start cutting, but ....
...there was a big crack in the gas tank. Darned, that will be challenging to repair. In the meantime .....
..... my pet saw, the John Deere (efco) CS62, gets pressed into milling duty. 20" bar and .325" cross cut chain. Only about 14" of bar sticks out beyond the guide board, barely enough for these logs.
BobL wanted to know exactly how the mini-mill is supported, so here is a close up.
And of course, no milling saw is complete without instrumentation. Masking tape was used to attach the Fast Tach for one run. Surprisingly, the saw would pull 8500 - 10,000 rpm in the cut. The CS62 has a broad powerband and it was easy to maintain a happy speed in the cut, much easier than my 066BB which has to be fed ever so carefully to stay in its narrow powerband. No speed records were set today, but the little Efco got the job done and didn't seem to mind the tough duty.
