I recieved some firewood with some nice color and decided to mill some up. My FIL does a lot of scroll work so small pieces are ok. I decided to keep it simple and have a $3.58 investment.

Just think....$3.50/$3.60 invested(not including your time), and the slab on the right when cut into blanks is worth roughly $40.00

Way to go!!!!

It looks like walnut but walnut is very rare in this area. It seems much softer than walnut, but I have no experience with green. In this area we have Ash and Elm everywhere, it doesnt have a pleasant smell.

if it smells like a sort of funky spice or incense it's walnut. sure it pretty no matter what it is.

With the pictures you provided, the comments that it smelled bad and that elm grows in your area, I would guess elm. Elm isn't that soft though, perhaps your chain was well sharpened!

Great little mill, I had a similar one for my first. Does a nice job on firewood sized pieces.

sweet. i do mine the long way, ripping them freehand with the saw then spending time with two planers(rougher and a finisher).that little devise sure looks slick.

Thanks for all the comments. If it wasnt for this site, I would have one less addiction. Nothing like good clean but dusty fun.

That little mill is just a bit of genius. I'm doing a bit of quartersawing on some small logs, and that mill has me working on my own version. Thanks for posting it.
