Is the serial number the only way to confirm a given Stihl model?

It would be the long way around it, but you could figure it out this way.

I'm currently cleaning up an 025, but the silver tag on the side of the cylinder head cover says 311Y, which I've seen indicate that it's an 026.

stihl has a '311y' sticker on a lot of thier saws.
i'd just go with the model tag on top. if the tag is missing then look closely at the bigger parts of the saw (tank, filter cover, ect.) and note the first four numbers (they should be recurring all over the saw on most of the parts).
