What mods are worthwhile and cost-effective in terms of increasing a saw's life?

Let's assume somebody has a saw that's powerful enough (is there such a thing?), used mostly for milling, and the owner just wants to maximize its lifespan.

A mild muffler mod seems obvious, but what else?

Simple - I just buy more tools. So long as I use the right tool for the right job I try not to worry about it. My next saw is a Dolmar 7900. Dont forget to have fun, its only work if you would rather be doing something else.
