ok here was the plan. me and buddy start climbing business then one day handle chipping and cleanup ourselves too. well his foot went numb and doctor says it was because of the strap on his Klein's. my plan was to train to be partner but be ground man while he trained me and did the climbing. btw his foot is still numb doctor said he may get all the feeling back one day. so anyways now i have to jump into climbing to do some jobs we have scheduled. going to do it really slow and practice a few times before my first time. i've got good balance, and have climbed a few times. but i still think its a bad idea. but really no choice. i'm not worried about getting to the cut i'm worried about things like sway and making a bad cut. anyways maybe if i make it through the weekend i'll post about how it all worked out.

I had a sawhorse tip over and strike me on the outside of my right leg, just above the ankle late last spring.  The two toes just inside the little toe, and their metatarsals for about halfway back both went on fire immediate, and when the pain subsided, they were numb.  The feeling has just about entirely returned now.  So far as I know, I'm not diabetic.

maybe i didnt give enough details. we did a job new years eve. he only climbed about 20 foot up to tie in a rope. about two weeks later he started to feel er not feel his foot. doctor asked what he had done lately and then the doctor assumed that was the cause. sounds to me like shoes tied to tight could have the same affect so just seems odd to me. i just think he should get a second opinion. probably an HMO doctor just wanting to get to 5pm

I have been wearing Kleins for a long time now and never had a problem like that. When I used to do the coconut palms (435 of them) at the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel, I would be on my Kleins for 10 days in a row, 3 times a year. I don't think the Kleins are the problem, but of course, I am not a medical doctor.

well kleins, bucks, geckos, no matter they all use basically the same strap. does anyone know of any other way to strap them to your feet? or any suggestions on how to spread the load out? i've suggested a piece of thick leather over top of his foot.

So what's the problem? If his foot is numb already then he can't feel a thing right. :p Forget the climber strap mods, tell 'em to get better boots.

I've never heard of that before. I know that many people will get pains in their feet from being on spurs for too long, but only a complete idiot would keep on doing the work if they were experiencing the pain each and every day.

BTW, what's up with your bucket truck purchase?

I have to agree with Koa Man i'm on my kleins allday long 6 days a week up and pown palms and have never had a problem with my gaffs. but when i started i didn't have steel shank boots and the bottom of my foot would start to hurt after about ten miniutes so i weent and bought a pair of wessco's and problem solved

There are all sorts of foot problems that could cause numbness. Additionally there are a bunch of lower back problems that can make the toes numb. He definitely needs a second opinion. Tell him to go to a Chiropractor of good reputation or a Podiatrist-or both.

well as it stands that may be the only way we can proceed. we didnt get the big job that we bid on. i'm more worried about insurance for truck and permits and what not. we are looking at a very old very inexpensive truck that may make it through a year or so. kinda looking grim but i will not give in so easily, quitters are losers

Wesscos are definitely the way for me! I trim trees for the power company here in Michigan and I had 2 pairs of Red Wings before that couldn't stand up to the daily abuse of climbing everyday. I bought my Wesscos a couple years ago and they've been great.

Better boots is the key. I like light mountaineering boots. They have more padding/support around the foot, are tough enough for tree work, and light enough to prune in. The hook in the arch is my arch nemesis.

I still don't understand why he can't climb. If his foot is numb, that means it doesn't hurt. Better than I can say for myself.
Walk it off.

WesCos blow Red Wings outta the water, and North Carolinas are the worst. However, I retired my WesCos years ago.

tm44 does your guy ever said any thing about his lower back feeling numb cause the reason im asking is i had a guy working for me that his foot would go numb but he had pinched the syatic nerve in his back five years ago

If he can't climb he's not much of a business partner. If I heard you right you two are your only two employees.......and neither can climb? Do you guys know plumbing or electricity? Even if you don't they are both done on the ground.......and then you don't have to buy a bucket truck.

Dan :)

with all due respect. i am just getting into this for part time. my partner is also only into this part time. he can climb he has done it for years, only a recent injury has caused a problem. dont flame me because you think your entrepreneurshiphighnessness is at a level where you can insult me. no one is asking for your interpretation on our situation. i'm asking what ppl think about this injury that may undermine our success. thank you for your useless post

disclaimer: climbing is difficult, i will learn, i am not degrading this profession
