I just ordered my Alaskan mark III and a mini-mill from right-tool.com and have a few questions. I also found a local shop that carries the Oregon ripping chain.
I was wondering how the really long cuts are made? I assume that no one has milling rails that are 40 FT long, so how do you get a 40’ straight beam?
Is there anywhere I can see some specific directions for set up and milling? I have looked through a few books, past posts… but not really seen details about setting up for the first cut….
The rail system looks fairly simple, like I could come up with something like that myself. Any pointers would be appreciated.
:p

Cool, Rob, the mill will come with some instruction sheets and they should show you in there how to set things up to mill long stuff w/o having to have, say, 40 foot slabbing rails. i haven't milled anything that long yet so i can't comment on how well it works or not. kevin will probably be able to expand both our horizons.

have fun!!

Yes, I am really looking forward to making some chips fly, and maybe even a little lumber. How long do you think it tool you to become proficient with the mill?:blob2:

I just typed in how to do it and then lost it all because I wasn't logged in. So rather than do that again just send me your email address and I will scan the pages from Chainsaw Lumbermaking that tell how to do it and email them to you.

There's a Yahoo group that's just for small scale milling. There's much information there about chainsaw milling.

Hey Robert,
Thank you very much for your offer! I would very much appreciate the info on milling. Would you also include the info on the book, exact title and maybe the isdn # if you think it is worth buying. I was able to get a ton of drying info and species info off the Milling Masters site. You can send me an e-mail at [email protected]

Thanks again,

Kevin,
Thanks for the link, seems to be some good info, but man that commercial between every post and navigating the threads makes me very thankful for this site.
