I was in a Walnut today, and some of the limbs had moss growing on top of them. I was thinning the tree, and I figure the thick canopy added to the growth of the moss.

I'm wondering, is the moss harmful to the tree?

The moss looks like it's been there for some time, so I'm really not sure if it's something that should be preserved or removed.

I read an article about moss in trees that stated the moss will not kill the tree if properly maintained but if you let it go for too long it will eventually overtake the tree,if I cane find the article I will send you the link. The only reason I read that particular article is I live in central Floridawe have mostly oaks and a lot of spanish moss I have a couple of cutomers that I remove moss for I. Was looking for a buyer at one time but now just feed it to the cows

This moss is more of ball type moss, it lays right on the bark on the top side of the branches, sort of looks like indoor/outdoor carpet as opposed to old man's beard.
