I need to know how to run my 170 now that I have opened up the muffler. Do I need to run a richer mix? 32:1? Is there a carb that I can purchase that has adjustments for this saw?
Number 1: tune it up with a fresh plug and fuel filter.
2: If the carb has any time on it , put a kit in it. Pay special attention to the inlet lever height and the jet, make sure it is clean.
The basics will cure a lot of problems. IF it still sounds lean on top, open the fixed jet SLIGHTLY. It doesn't take much.
You say to open the fixed jet slightly, how do I go about doing that? There is only one adjustment screw on the screw. The saw runs great I just don't want to run it on the lean side and I am trying to figure out my options. Thanks.
I am the head jet hacker.
It requires a set of number drills and a light touch. Only go 1 size larger at a time. I have had just cleaning the jet with a drill be enough.
I'm sure there is a fully adjustable carb that fits that fits that saw with no modification but I have not found it. Truth be told I stopped looking once I modded an 023 carb to fit. There is an impulse hole on the 023 carb that has to be plugged or it will cause an air leak, and the throttle linkage is not a direct fit so swap the throttle shafts between the two carbs and bolt it on. Then there is the matter of acess to the screws, you have to drill a few holes in the handle to get to the screws. My 170 runs perfectly but this was a lot of work to do to a little saw and only worth the effort because I learned a few things on the way.
Thanks sedanman. I might try that approach. For now I think I am just going to run some synthetic 32:1 and let it eat. The little saws don't cost mush so I wouldn't be losing much if it goes belly up.
