My friend has a dumpster business and pulled a partial MS170 out for me. It was missing the top cover, air filter housing, kill switch shaft, and carb. Compression was 145, the P&C looked excellent and it had spark. After a closer look, I found part of the kill switch shaft support was broken off (last pic) Being the miser that I am and realizing it wouldn't take much to get it running, I decided to try to repair the support. I cut a thin piece of sheet metal to fit the broken area and soldered on a section of brass from a tube I machined to fit the shaft. I bolted this in place along with some JB Weld and filed/ground it to match the broken area and allow for the fuel line. I also had to widen the area on the new shaft so it moved as it should. I found some leaks in the lower motor cover so I pulled the motor and resealed along with new seals. Bearings felt fine. I found the missing parts on ebay and re-assembled. Also had a leaky fuel cap. I went ahead and replaced the caps, fuel line, oil line, and duckbills. Saw starts and runs great.
