I go to fill the bar oil res. yesterday and see the half moon black flip up thing on the cap is only half there. The shop said "under waranty just bring er in" (only had for maybe 2 weeks now?) and they gave me another. I bought a spare and spare for the gas too. They both seem really hard to turn, especially when its cold. This morning it is 6 degrees F, will probably warm up to 10 or so time I hit first tree. Is this gonna be a recurring problem? Don't believe I've seen it talked about here. Any advice? Thanks for all the perfeshinable opinions.

The caps have their pros and cons...the biggest problems tend to be with the oil cap.

If you overfull the oil tank, the cap will be very difficult or impossible to seat.
Remedy: don't overfill the oil tank!

If you don't get it lined up properly, and twist it, and twist it, trying to get it in, it won't seat down, you go to click down the 'toggle' and it pops back up out of the hole.
Remedy: the bottom half has been pre turned, grab it with both hands and twist it back (oil all over your hands), line it up, turn slowly till it drops down, then twist and lock.

The gas cap has a notch on the cap and by the side of the tank that you can sight and line up, the oil cap only has it on the cap, take some time to see where the notch on the oil cap lines up with some feature on the tank and use that as a guide when putting it on...works for me.

It's a stupid cap

The engineering department at Stihl must be bored. They over engineered one of the most used parts of the saw, and I'm sure it is some safety feature or something but come on let's all just admit it, it sucks. The gas cap is easy the stupid oil cap is a #####. A great little saw and I can hate it atleast once a day because of that cap.

Cant you order the old style caps or wont they work in the tank openings?

In reviewing the posts on this site I simply assumed I was a noob when it came to tree work, based on only 5 years groundie experience but guys...come on?!?!?! On a 200T, simply place the oil cap, black side to the left, top at 11 o'clock, bottom at 5, into the tank and give it a 3rd twist(clockwise). It's not that hard! There's a bit of finesse that comes into play when you overfill but if you've done it a decent amount of times it shouldn't be a problem. If you haven't done it a decent amount of times perhaps you should reconsider using it in a tree.

Went out with the new oil cap and first fill, had trouble getting it to turn far enough. With rag in hand, did the counter clockwise twist thing and then it would go. That was it!!!!! Had no trouble since. 5 or 6 tank fulls and I think I like? I did read a hundred or so more posts about this topic but none as helpful as yours, THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Once you've figured out the quirks they're good cause they're fast and tooless. Just can't forget to train the new ground guy to double check that they seated when he gasses you up. Can't tell you how many times my 200 has dumped gas and oil all over the place. I even climbed all day with a big pee stain of fuel down my front. I remember being worried about how it might affect my saddle. My HT131 oil cap skeeted just a few days ago all over the driveway.

One of my guys took a sharpie and make two ticks where you have to line it up when you put them on. Works superb now just line up the two little lines and on like flin. They have since been replaced by two scribes I made with my engraver. Just so they wouldn't wipe off. Just my method.
