repacing ring's in a ms280 stihl and it has no base gasket but dealer show's one. is it best with gasket or tube sealer?

Someone probably pulled the gasket out to build some compression. Check to see if thay have cut the ports taller. If not you can run it either way, just make sure you use a good sealer, plain RTV doesn't work real well for longevity.

If you put the gasket back in (you should if they haven't messed with the ports) it just goes on dry - no sealer of any type.

If you decide to leave out the gasket, check the squish. I've found out the hard way that you can't assume the prior guy knew anything about modding!

the owner said it's never been worked on before, he bought it new.

uh oh... Sorry, I didn't read 280.. I thought it was 028. NO, the 280 doesn't have a gasket. It's kind of a wacky hybrid between an 029 and an 026... It uses Dirko HT red sealer bewteen the two halves. I bet the dealer made the same mistake..

You are best to use the Dirko sealant- I haven't found anything that comes close. The Stihl dealer will likely have some.

just checked with dealer again and he said he was wrong, the ms280 doesn't have a gasket. Yes, dealer made same mistake and had ordered 028 ring's. thank's
