I was cutting some firewood (hedge and hackberry) yesterday and after about 20min of cutting I noticed that there was some smoke coming from under the side cover around the clutch. Bad thing was I didn't open it up right there to see exactly where it was coming from. I opened it up this morning and took some pics of the clutch and sprocket.

My question is for that short of time cutting it shouldn't have gotten hot unless it was slipping or something right? Is it possible that the sprocket had some oil on it and it was just burning off?

By the looks of the sprocket drum, is it possible you were running it with the chain brake on?

It is just dirty on the inside. I had not touched the brake at all, except for when I sharpened the chain the night before. could the brake need to be adjusted (loosened out some), maybe it is causing drag on the sprocket?

It is coming out as chips and they were fresh blow down trees on a fence row. going to clean up the inside of the sprocket and see if that helps with the smoking, also going to pick up a 7 tooth sporcket to see how that does for pulling the 20" bar through some of the bigger logs

What size of wood are you cutting? How much of that bar was in wood? I take it you are using a 8 pin.

Only made about 5 cuts on some 15"+/- logs then was just limbing the brush off before I noticed it smoking, wasn't smoking bad but enough to notice. yes it is a 8 pin sprocket.
