I have a MS291 that is new and I noticed the bar does not seem to get enough oil. My 021 uses tank for tank and the 291 something like 1/2 tank oil to 1 tank gas. The chain seems to stick from time to time...

Check the oil tank vent to make sure its clear. Had similar problem with my farm boss and that's what fixed it. Vent on mine was at bar mount area and is a round metal plug with a small hole in the center. Not sure if yours is same but worth a peek.

Thanks, I'll see if the Sthil has something like that.

This may seem simple but make sure the oil hole in bar is not plugged.
Thats exactly why I take the bar off from time to time and blow everything out with compressed air.
If it has an oil adjustment it should be located on the bottom.
There should be a small hole for a small screwdriver.
Checking the vent cap is a good idea as well.
Check the pickup screen inside the oil tank. It may not be in the right spot in the tank and can only pick up half the oil.

sb47, I finally got to the 291 and pulled the bar off, the hole in the side of the bar was plugged and the groove was full of gunk... I'm hoping that was the problem as everything else looked good.

Yep, take good care of that saw and she should last a long time.
Good to hear you got it fixed.
I also pull the bar if I've hit any dirt with it. That grit mixed with bar oil will grind that bar and sprocket down very quick.
I try to pull the bar about every 10 tanks or so and blow everything out.
Like constantly sharpening the chain, cleaning and maintenance is something that needs to be done very often on a chain saw.
Be safe and happy cutting!

Yea, that is one sweet saw I try to take good care of her and the older 021. I normally don't cut very much but I'm clearing a hill side for a 30 x 50 x 12 building and it was loaded down with some big white and red oaks and one pretty big hickory. I've got 4 left to cut and the digging starts... I better service the old 310A soon...

Thanks

The oil pick up tube has a screen and just lays in the tank.
Depending on what angle the saw is when cutting may relate to where the pick up is in the tank.
This may or may not affect if it can use all the oil in the tank.

Every other time I sharpen my chain I take the bar off, clean it out then flip it over to run chain on other side. Glad u got it working.
