I had a post earlier on whether to get a 20" or 24" bar and I have decided to go with a 24" GB new off ebay. The guy has three different chains he can give me with it. Which should I choose?
  • full chisel standard seq
  • full chisel skip
  • semi chisel std seq

I am leaning towards the semi chisel std. This is for stumping 20 to 36" dead stumps, both pine and hardwoord. Will be using wedges too. Would also like this to be a blade for mill work if I get a mill guide. Is it possible to do stumps and mill work with the same chain?

Thanks!
Ed

Why not get them all - that way you will have chains for different application.....

.....but for stump cutting with a 24" on a 361, the best type of chain would probably be semi-chisel full skip, which is not on the list........

For cross grain ripping, you need a ripping chain - or you can change the top-plate angle on an ordinary chain to 10 degrees or so (not worth the trouble imo).

Anyway, a 361 is small for that kind of work, unless the wood also is small......

Will go with the full skip that comes with it, and pick up some skip semi chisel from my stihl dealer buddy. Would like to go with a Stihl bar but for a homeowner like myself, can't justify the $$. Then again, what am I doing with a MS361:biggrinbounce2: This GB bar (with replacable tip) and chain comes to $60 shipped to the house. Thanks for the tips!

Nothing wrong with the GB bar. Stihl bars are nice and all, but they're hardly the end all, be all of bars. I certainly wouldn't feel like I was missing out on something by getting a non-Stihl bar.

Ed in maine - same problem

Ed, let me know how this works out. I have 8 acres in Indiana & I am thinking of your idea 24" on my MS-361. (It is my biggest saw). Any info or advice with dirty wood or stumps is welcome. Thanks - Fiore

That GB bar is probably much heavier than the bar you should have got........ :biggrinbounce2: :biggrinbounce2:

I asked the guy if I could get a skip semi chisel and he replied back to me like I had 3 eyes. Said he had never heard of such a chain. So he is sending me the 24" GB bar and a skip full chisel. Will get here on Wednesday.

Fiore, I'll start a new thread when it comes in and let you know how it goes. I'm looking forward to it. I'm like you, the 361 is my biggest saw, so I'm going to give those stumps a wack!:blob2:

Now you tell me troll! Oh well, will give it a shot. Here is a link to the ebay auction:

As far as the ripping chain goes I would like to suggest the rip chain that Baileys sells. Great chain and by far the best prices on it that I have found.

For a few stumps I bet it will be just fine. If you'll be cutting a lot of stuff this size get an older 044 or 038 Magnum. I've cut some stuff that size with my 390 and 24" ES bar, buit these guys are right it is hard on saws, just be sure to keep plenty fuel in itso it doesn't run out buried in the cut and let it cool down once in awhile

Thanks Diesel, I don't have too many. Would only cut a couple each day with the 24", then I would just put my 16" back on. Depends on if the stumps are in the way for twitching the logs out.

I went to school for a few years in Palatka by the way, G'ville is the old stompin grounds....
