As much as I hated drilling my cover, it was really no problem using the drill press to do it. I am very happy with the results. I've been tossing around the idea for awhile, and finally did the mod. After the purchase of my 661R, I realized just how much practical benefit there is to having dual spikes, aside from them just looking wicked awesome cool. I think they really give you a lot more control over the cut, so I wanted to put them on the 362. So, here are the before and after pics...IMG_0142.JPG IMG_0143.JPG IMG_0144.JPG IMG_0147.JPG

They will also bolt straight on to a MS261 for those who might want to upgrade. Its good how stihl allowed for these mods in the design giving users factory options. l like my 362 spikes and roller catcher on my Snellerized MS261. Decent spikes on new saws is rare nowdays but some of the metal fab members sometimes offer up custom spikes in the post. l got one to replace the little silly thing that is stock on a 550xp.

I added outside spikes to all my saws, just makes it easier. If UR cutting a notch, the "one" side won't slide!

Actually ordered a 440 outer for the 362, but had to modify it to get it to line up. Far more trouble than it was worth, but I'm glad to have dual spikes on it.

These were a drop-in fit, once I bored the holes.

Quick question. The instructions show leaving the original chain catcher in place. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I was going to take it off and use the bolt to plug up the hole. I noticed in X's pix that he took his off...

I always cut them off. The bolt doesn't sit right without the chamfered part that's left of the cut catcher.

Ah, yes, that makes sense. I noticed that it didn't sit flush with the catcher removed. Yours is an elegant solution!

Nice spikes! I have a set on mine. But the bolts that come in the kit are to short for the new style captivate nut clutch covers. The kit was originally for the 361 which did not have the captivate nuts, the covers on the new saws are thicker and the bolts are to short that come in the kit.

Go to your local hardware store and buy two longer M5 bolts, then put on the nuts on the outer spike and trim off the excess threads.

You can see in your 3rd picture the bolt threads are not even half way threw the nuts, those all metal locking nuts dont work until you engage the last few threads at the end of the nut. Hate for your nuts to loosen up and fall off.

Thanks for the advice! I'd hate for my nuts to fall off, too!

Got and installed the longer bolts today. I think my nuts are safe!

Seriously, I really appreciate the tip, because I would never of thought of this issue. Gotta love the knowledge base and info sharing here on AS! Thanks buddy!
