I've just bought a MS440 off eBay and was wondering what exactly I've got.
It hasn't arrived yet so I cant send the serial # off to Stihl to find out what version it is.
I do know it doesn't have a decompression valve from the picture.

Does anyone know what the differences between the MS440, MS440 W, MS440 C, MS440 Magnum, MS440 Magnum R and the MS440 WVH?

I know:-
R means Wrap-handle.
VW means heated handles and heated carburetor.

So

What does the C mean?
What does just W mean?
What does the H mean?
What is the difference between a MS440 and a MS440 Magnum?
Does the Magnum have more power?
Is a MS440 just a 044 with the new filler caps and name plates?

044 after 1996 model) <>440

The 440 now has slightly different ports and piston (just ring pin spacing) and an uprated engine to 5.4hp. A transition model of the 044 in late 2000 shared the new cylinder/piston - this was the ony model where the "then" difference was just the caps and the name plate.

In 2002 the 440 crank big-end bearing was changed to carbon nitrited, and the rod machined to allow better lubrication of the big end.

The 440 was available with both the decomp and without.

The Muffler got restricted about 2000...

"Magnum" is just an $1 label...

Yup! lakeside got it right, it's an early one! :hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2:

The "C" means cat muffler on this saw model, unlike on some others. They are easy to distinguish, as the muffler is metal colored, not black. They have a lower power rating than the others.

"W" means heated handles (but not carb).

WVH once was what now is just WV ("Arctic" in North America).

Thanks for all the replies.

Just have to wait for the Postal Service now.
5.2Hp or 5.4Hp, not a great difference really.
Shouldn't be a bad saw for £170 in the UK.

difference

Baisically a 440 is a 440 magnum with the sticker peeled off. They are the same saw, bacause I believe that the newer 044's that where before the 440's where magnum's also, so they where 044 magnums, but I also know that there where just plain 044's too, they where the older ones.:hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2:

Sounds logic if the "Magnum" was added when power rating went up on the 044 (about 1999?), and it probably just stuck when it became the MS440.

....probably the same with the 046/460, if it is true (really sounds too logic to be true, though). :D :ices_rofl:
