I grew up watching me Pa cut firewood with am 041. I got to run it on a rare occasion, but mostly I was wielding an ax doing the splitting. When he moved out of this place and I moved in, he took his 041 with him and I bought an 029 on ebay real reasonable and used that for several years. I was happy with the 029, but it was heavy for all the more power it had. I traded it for an MS260 - nice saw, but not enough power for me. I was thinking that, for all the more wood I cut, I could get by with it. Well, I changed my mind and purchased a 440. Finally cooled off enough yesterday to make for a decent wood cutting day and I cut a load of wood with the new saw. Man, what a huge difference!! This 440 cuts like crazy. I don't even notice the weight (compared to the 260) - with the speed of this saw, you have it in your hands half as much time as the smaller saw!

Anyhow, as I stated in a previous post, I had intentions of buying a 441, but our regional distributer screwed us over and they won't be available here until late this year. The dealer promised me a good deal on a trade when the 441 does become available. I look forward to the improved air filtration system mostly.

One observation I made on the 440 - it does seem to be a bit cold-blooded. It starts right up when cold, but I have to stay on the throttle to keep it running until it warms up a bit. Is this due somehow to the larger engine or do I need to tweek the carb a bit?

Like Lake said richen up the low screw just a tad. The idle may come down a tad as well when you richen up the low screw, if so just adjust the idle screw to get a good idle. Take note Stihls do seem abit cold natured unitl they are broke in good. Thats the tight engine when its new.

If I had it to do over again, I might in fact purchase the 441 also. However, they weren't available when I got my 440. I had four saws done up with woods mods. The 440 seems to have gained the most with the mods. It's an all out screamer. The builder believes it should get substantially even better as it breaks in. It's my favorite, when I go to grab a saw, it always seems to be the one.

Thank you much, guys. Today was my anniversary - took my better half out for a day on the town. When I get back out to the woodlot, I will adjust carb per your advice.

The 440 is a good choice. It is basically the same saw as the old 044 from what I can tell and the 044/Ms440 have been one of the most popular midrange production saws around the world since I can remember. I almost wish I had spent the extra buck and gotten that when I bought the 390 last year, but shelling out the 749+tax was a bit much for the budget at the time. Have a good one,
J.D.

There's obviously a big problem with his saw! He's decided to go on a date, rather than spend time with his saw.
It could be ring failure, or maybe a bad crank seal... what do you guys think?

LOLOLOL, now that was a good one,

It might have been best to go on the date to insure the purchace of the 441 later down the road!!!!!!!!

BINGO!! We have a winner!!

I had to take her to see her Mom (Mother-In-Law from Hell) in order to get the 440. Honest to God truth. After running this saw, it was well worth it though. :dizzy:
