while going over maintenance and cleaning on a well used newly aquired ms460 i found a piece of steel bout the size of your little fingernail (bout .030" thick) between the clutch and oil pump. it has a 90* bend n the middle with a wing coming off the top of each side. its shaped such that it could fit on the outside of a corner. i have looked through ipl and shop manual and cant find any reference to anything like it. its been bouncing and pinging around n there for some time but looks like no detremental damage.

does anyone have any idea what this is and its purpose? is it essential?

thanks n advance sorry, no pics but my daughter has the camera.

good day 1953greg

As Huskynut says.. and yes, it's essential. You should have three others like it on your clutch holding the shoes to the center portion. Yours may have broken off the backside so take of the clutch and have a look.

im sure its not a clutch retainer. bout the same thickness and half the overall size and the retainers have two 90* bends n them and the clutch is still intact also. the piece n question is not broken off of something. has no jagged rough edges. beaten up some but still useable.

im guessing its was left n there from a previous job or something.

really has me buffaloed.

you guys came through again. i was definitely wrong. it was half of a retainer that was folded, but not of the present clutch. no telling how long its been n there as the present clutch is half worn out. after strightening the fold it fits the shape and contour of half a retainer. someone left it n there sometime past. i didnt have a clue what it was as this is the first clutch i have pulled.

thanks again lakeside and huskynut

Greg you can always count on them guys to tell ya right. I watch their posts and they surely know their saws. While you got it apart you may as well toss in 3 new clutch springs and replace all 3 retainers. Might wanna take a good close look at you oil line from your oil pump to make sure that broken retainer hasn't cut a gash in it. Be hell to put her back in service and see oil running out the bottom of ya saw. I say that from experiance and its no fun to tear it apart twice....

Geeze, thanks Thall!

..also make sure your the holes where the springs attach in the shoes haven't been worn to a tear-drop. I find the shoes wear more where they attach to the center carrier than where they contact the drum. Make sure they don't rock back and forth on the carrier, and if hey do, it's usually time to replace the carrier AND shoes. BTW it's cheaper to buy a new clutch than to buy the carrier and shoes.

No need for thanks. Just stating fact pilgrim. (John Wayne 1955)

wil b installing a near new complete clutch and have throughly cleaned the saw completely. the saw needed a top end so i ordered a big bore kit from baileys. wil just clean up the burrs, smooth the ports, gut the muffler and dual it out . im not into the port timing thing, yet. sure wouldnt want to start on a saw of this magnitude.

still need a sprocket cover and an air filter flange/mount and saw wil b complete. anyone have those for sale?

couple more items of intrest:
1. whats the purpose of the black rubber air baffle (#13 on ipl) on top between the filter cover and top shroud/cover? is it necessary? if so i need it also.
2. whats the purpose of the black plastic baffle (#12 on ipl) inside the air filter? its cup shaped. i havent seen one of those and it seems as it would retard air flow.

thanks again all i feel better already. :) 1953greg

1. to keep the junk out, and the airflow correct. The 066 has the same thing. It's cheap to buy from your dealer.
2. To stop the carb back-splatter from oil soaking the HD filter fabric. The older version didn't have this and needed a sponge inside the filter to stop the splatter. Yes, you need it.

thall,
i checked for the oil line and it looks to me as there is not one on the 460. i have a broken dn 044 lying beside it and the oil line is clearly present on the 044. on the 460 it appears that the oil is sent through a passage way through the case. there is a rubber tapered gromet out the back of lower rt corner of the pump. according to the ipl and my observations it looks like thats where the oil goes. could someone verify that?

sure is a lot to learn bout these little wizzards. good day greg
