Hi,
I'm looking at both saws, is there any real difference between the 2 for milling. The 088 guy says his is better because it doesn't have a rev limiter but the MS880 only has a few hours on it?

The 088 also has a modified or different exhaust.

Thanks,

Warren

I'm no expert on those models but hope my simple input will help. Both saws are monsters and can be ported with big gains. Tho 088 if still in good condition and MM mod may make alittle more power. That said the 880 is way newer and can be muff modded. Also a unlimited coil can be added, but if you are golng to only mill with this saw a mini tach cam ce installed and be very usefull for tuning and keeping up with RPM in the cut. Also finding the best way to file the chain for max speed.
A few things to think on but seems clear to me. Hope this helps and best of luck.

In practice, when milling, the revs for a stock 880 and 088 are typically in the 8.5 to 10.5k range so whether a saw has a rev limiter by itself doesn't make any difference to overall cutting speed.

A muffler modification should enable the saw to breathe easier and run cooler. Whether it adds to the cutting speed rev (i.e. faster cutting speed) depends on the modification. I modded my exhaust to increase the opening from 14 to 19 mm and noticed the saw ran cooler but it did not increase the peak tuning revs much (maybe a few hundred RPM) and maybe added a but more grunt to the cutting rev range. I can still tune the saw to run slightly rich at ~11.3k and that's about where I set it for milling and that's why I did not bother changing to a non-rev-limiting coil.

If a muffler is opened right up (and/or if a saw is ported) then the max safe revs may take it over the rev limiter which then makes it impossible to tune correctly and more importantly it may lean out the air-mix ratio beyond a safe limit. This is when increasing the main carby jet size is essential and to tune a saw in this state requires no interference from rev limiters,

Given the heavy load milling places on saws one needs to be careful about these sorts of modifications and given I wanted my 880 to last me a few years I am happy to take longevity over short term performance gains.
