Thinking about doing a muffler mod on my ms290. My question is can a shop still do work on a saw that is out of compliance?. Im in CA, absolute pain to get anything with decent power without them choking it down because of CARB/EPA bs. So, if I did the mod on the muffler then took it in to have the carb adjusted or the saw tuned up, would it pop up a red flag?

in most shops it will definately raise a red flag, especially if it comes to a warranty issue. If you don't have the ability or capability to work and tune your own saw you are far better off leaving it to a competant tech (you might have to find a different dealer to accomplish this). If your saw is no longer under warranty, it means little to nothing to a dealer.

If you are mechanical enough to mod the muffler and set the carb back up then there is just about zero reason to ever take the saw to the dealer. Modding the muffler and pulling the carb limiters = voided waranty unless the shop guy was really helping you out.

A muffler mod requires carb adjustments. Modding the muffler without adjust the carb = running WAY too lean! You will score the piston / cylinder.

If you are not VERY comfortable with setting your carb properly then you need to shy away from doing any mods.
